3 dead in murder-suicide near Lake Worth, police say

There are 31 comments on the South Florida Sun-Sentinel story from Jan 12, 2008, titled 3 dead in murder-suicide near Lake Worth, police say. In it, South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that:

“If he wanted to end his life, do it. But to end their lives is unbelievable.”

A man shot and killed his wife and 4-year-old son Thursday, then turned the gun on himself in the home he once lived in, sheriff's detectives said.

There were no signs of forced entry at the house in the 2000 block of Collier Avenue. Co-workers of Sydney Gift, an X-ray technician at Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach, found it odd when she didn't come to work Friday. One co-worker with a key to Gift's house went there about 9 a.m. with a Lake Worth police lieutenant and opened the door to the gruesome scene. Gift was found in the bathroom and her son in the living room, next to his father, the Sheriff's Office said. Read more

I work in Bethesda and it's so weird, because I would see her everyday when she would come by my department. Now the bell rings and I expect to see her, but I don't. It's so scary when it hits so close to home. I couldn't believe it, I just saw her last week, we spoke and everything and now she's gone....

I worked with Sydney for a short while.... she was the sweetest person you could ever meet. Always pleasant and she had a wonderful sense of humor. I am sure she will be missed by many of her close friends and by anyone who was priveleged enough to meet and know her.
This is a tragedy no one could have ever seen coming. Very very sad thing to happen.

He loved them "madly". When Syd filled up for divorce and sent him back to our dad's home,
his life as his son Julian's became hellish.
He raised Julian since he was born, while she was much more concerned about her carrier. Julian
wanted to stay with his dad, not with his mom. The court did not give Alex custody, because he was jobless since a couple of month : this decision caused a suffering without limit that became so unbearable that he did not find another exit. Please read about murder-suicide you might
understand.

Well, take it from me, I know what divorce and custody is like. Just read Haley's Story on my website which is one my profile. But his resolution was the wrong one.

I fought for eight years to prevent my daughter from being killed. My ex killed my daughter 8 years ago and was finally sentenced to 13 years in prison yesterday for violating her probation a 2nd time.

I read your story, I am sorry for Haley and you.
your story has some similitude with my brother's
though it's not not the same, of course, I agree
with you his resolution was the wrong one, it's
unexcusable, but it was his excuse. I believe that if court had gave him 50% time custody this
would have never happen. I believe that if your
american gun legislation was less backward this
would have never happen. Why Florida (esp.Miami) has one the highest homicide-suicide rate - among all regions in the world ?(sources from publications of J.Coid and C.M. Milroy) while these tragedies (almost) never happen in my backward France ?

I do feel for your loss very, very much. The divorce courts in Florida are disgusting. Some States are even worse in this country when it come to fathers and it always depends on the Judge you get and what I find to be horrible is that whoever has the money for the best attorney wins. And it is not in the best interest of the children to keep a father or mother away from their child in many cases.

Your brother, sadly probaby felt that all was lost and went off the deep end, and again I am very sorry for your loss.

Right now, I'm very busy caring for my 80 year old mother in New York, going back and forth to Florida.

But hopefully in about a year or so, I intend to try and work with a family law attorney, in an effort to try and change some these laws in Florida Family Court. One reason my own daughter was killed is because of these courts. But you have to take baby steps to change these laws. But even a small change can and will save lives.

Once again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

Be well,
Jacques

FIRST of all they never went to court! Alex was completely engrossed in his own internal struggles. He was verbally abussive and threatend her many times. The last thing she ever wanted to do was breakup her family....but in the end he still would not let her escape. Truth ...is there was never any courts involved!!! Truth....Julian was so much better off with someone who was stable..could and would work. Truth...Alex had suffered from depression for years before any of this happend...and you can ask the rest of your family who here IN AMERICA have seen all of this first hand! Alex was sick and needed help..help which he refused!

It is true they did not go to court yet, but according to all the legal correspondance that was translated to me from english to my tongue so I don't misunderstand all the legal jargon -between Alex's and Syd's laywers, that is what was scheduled to happen : no custody for him.I will never admit he was verbally abusive and
would threaten her, Even her parents told me she was not suspiscious.
to be continued...

the 3 of them they spent Christmas 2007 at my father's home with other familly member's, no one noticed any "violence" in his behavior.he did not refuse help, you are wrong my Delray'Beach Friend : He was deeply depressed and was seing both a general practioner & a psychiatrist,he was under antidepressant since years. Only antidepressants, no psychotropics, no mental illness - apparently - complete medical records have not been made available to us...

I'll finish after that : I don't want to hear my
familly's and relatives's opinion anymore about all this...Alex and I were always very close, since our childhoud. we exchanged a lot by phone and email, I can tell I was maybe his closest confident, as well as he was mine. I also know I might have a distorted image of the events, especially because the police still didn't
close the case, we actually have no idea of what happend exactly, no report nothing...Delray Friend please email me at oli.nowak@wanadoo.fr tks

All I can say is this... selfishness took the two innocent lives. Selfishness and madness reigned. Period. I miss Sydney, alot. I never had the privelege of meeting Julian, but, as a divorced mother, I am APPALLED at the actions of the father. There are well over 30 million people suffering from depression in this country, and murder suicide is apprehensible. PERIOD! I , myself, was depressed for a while during my marriage with ywo small children, and I NEVER, EVER ,EVER thought of something as heinous as the crime committed on1/10/08. I grew up in Naples, Fl. with Sydney, and her absence has made an entire community sick and scared. Love to the Gift's...you are in my thoughts and prayers . ALWAYS.. Sincerely, and with much Sympathy, Zoe Kerns
