I'll keep my SUV for weekends and I got my wife to trade for a Ford Focus for weekdays, our plan is the share rides to work. I was lucky, my employer allowed me to change my working hours to match with my wife's.
Another take is: Do you think someone who pays 65K for a Hummer cares how much he/she pays for gas?

Buying a smaller second car would be an option except for insurance. If you are a single driver, and have a second car, you pay pretty much double insurance, even though few people can drive two cars at once (and that would sort of defeat the purpose of saving gas).
Until insurance companies are required to charge only for what they provide, this option is not reasonable.

If you could afford the truck/suv and the gas then you buy it. I'm 19 and drive a pick up with 14-15 mpg and my buddys suv gets 10-12 with regular gas up here in CT at 4.00-4.10 were hurting but we have steady decent paying jobs, plus our work is always in demand.

Did you know that the Federal government created SUV'? Due to environmentalism and regulation, the government decreed in 1977 that the station wagon wasn't fuel efficient enough. Manufacturers changed the platform the the design of the type to be built on a truck frame, creating the SUV. The need for the station wagon for large families caused an immediate shift to that type and drove the sales of SUVs. You may not have a family. You may not have any friends for all I know. Yet if you had an ounce of responsibility you could possibly understand why a family might need a larger vehicle.

Especially in Florida, where the roads are totally flat, SUV's are (mostly) just a luxury item for the show-off spoiled types. Glad to see them bearing the brunt of the gas problem.

This is exactly what happen in the 70's when gas prices spiked and there were fuel shortages. All of the "full size" cars became worthless. If you have cash, this makes for a good time to get a really good deal on a large vehicle if you need one.

I just bought an 08 Armada, used, with 1500 miles on it, loaded including a sun roof for $30K. I figure whatever I spend in gas I made up for in the sale price of the car. There's no way I'd ever get my kids to cram into a car when they're used to the room of an SUV, not to mention the DVD players, etc.

I can only drive one at a time, but the insurance company says that I might let someone else drive them and they "could" have the exposure of all 15 on the road at once. Believe me, I NEVER all ow anybody to drive my babies.

The station wagon was replaced by the Mini Van in the 1980's. Starting in the 1990's, the Mini Van was replaced by the SUV and now the SUV is being replaced by the CUV. True, a family may need a larger vehicle but an SUV is a nothing more than a converted military vehicle and weighs way to much with a lower center of gravity causing it to flip over. The SUV is nothing more than a toy and a status symbol for many who own one. Having friends has nothing to do with the type of vehicle you drive except to impress them and show off. Those who own an SUV neither have a large boat to haul or a trailer. Better think again about the need and size of your family before buying a vehicle. There are many more vehicles to chose from for family needs.

I am loving this. Now those polar bears and penguins will have frigid winters again!! Forget about the deer and Karaboo that starve due to harsh winters... the polar beers are so much cuter.

Very, very good. People who drive SUV's, Hummers and big pickup trucks should pay through the nose for gas. It is about time that people who waste gas have to pay for it in their wallets. They don't care about the environment, so now maybe they'll care about having to pay through the nose for their gas wasting. The higher gas prices are wonderful news. Gas wastesr pay though the nose!

I remember being a kid in the 80's begging my dad to buy a Trans Am. He got a Datsun 280ZX instead. Cool enough ride. I always wanted to go for a spin in it, as did all my friends and baseball teammates. Speed before DVD's.

This is great news. Consumers wanted manufactors to produce more efficient vehicles. The smart car makers listened and are doing fine. There is no need to mandate a firm what to produce. Let the market tell them. All the suckers that have an SUV, try to sell it. Forget about the gas consumption, take into account what you get on a resale! When gas hits $5 per gallon, you can't even give away your SUV. I understand the need for an SUV if you need to haul items or need it for business, but to many house wifes are driving them. Again, the market does wonders for consumers. Long live capitalism and freedom.

How much ya wanna bet the SUV owners who are "upside down" with their car payments are the same ones facing foreclosure on their houses? It's a mental attitude..buy more than you need or can afford because you can get it on credit!
