Our local Republican party chairman should know that the laws of our state and nation are based on the principle of “innocent until proven guilty,” NOT “innocent , unless he is a Democrat who beat an incumbent Republican”. He should also know that a felon is a person CONVICTED of a felony which includes punishment of more than one year in prison.

“Expungement” is a legal process whereby any court records may be sealed, including the fact that a person was charged with a crime but never tried or convicted. Asking anyone why they did something 33 years ago is akin to asking,“When have you stopped beating your wife?”

The local Republican chairman thinks it is “scary” to expunge the record of a person who was charged but not tried or convicted. Then he should be absolutely terrified with Republican Congressman Darrell Issa (CA-49) being appointed to chair the House Committee on House Oversight and Investigations. The richest member of Congress and one of its largest Republican political contributors, he is also the only member to be convicted of illegal arms possession and charged multiple times with car theft, insurance fraud and suspected arson of his own autoparts factory.(For confirmation, check www.wikipedia.org under Darrell Issa.)

Is relying on one source of “information” now considered good journalism, especially if illegally obtained as it appears this source was? But since GOP Fox (so-called) News has won a Supreme Court decision which allows them to require reporters to report information they know to be inaccurate, apparently anything is now acceptable.

Is the Sandusky Register trying to outdo the Wall Street Journal, or GOP Fox News in tabloid journalism? What’s next? Perhaps stories based on tapping voicemails or wiretapping?
This “story” is an unfortunate indication that the current mayor and Republican Party (like the Republican Party nationally) will not accept the decision of the voters. Could this attitude be a major cause for the election result? Let’s put to rest petty partisan squabbles and personal vendettas, move on and concentrate on addressing the needs of Port Clinton’s residents and the city's problems and opportunities.
