Maplewood voters oust Mayor Diana Longrie after a contentious term

Maplewood voters have ousted Mayor Diana Longrie after a contentious term. City council member Will Rossbach gained more than 51 percent of the vote to oust Longrie, who garnered about 39 percent.

I certainly hope the new mayor puts a limit on the length of council meetings. When a meeting runs until midnight and people addressing the council have unlimited time to yack about nothing, it is time for some control. The ousted mayor had absolutely no control..instead calling it openess.

One thing is clear - taxes in Mpalewood will go up, and the council will vote 5-0 to raise them. I don;t want to hear anyone who voted for these clowns complain that their taxes went up.

I asked people if they "researched" their candidates and most of them said "no". When I discussed a few of Rossbach's proposals, they were shocked and said, "I didn't know that". Well, Maplewood, you voted the scoundrel in. Let's see how many contracts his company gets for building, and lets all watch the taxes go UP UP UP UP -- to cover the new government positions that he will create.

Apparently, Maplewood has not gone down the toilet enough the past few years, and Maplewood residents chose to vote in a self serving, obsequious, ego maniac to lead them farther down the plumbing to finish the job.

My husband and I have been talking about moving out of this soon to be ghetto after 22 years. It looks like the time has come.

Isn't it funny how Rossbach supposedly (a) holds all the power with his current council majority, but (b) has secret plans to do all kinds of nefarious things if he only had the power to do it?

Funny how all those terrible things that were going to happen as a result of the elections two years ago...didn't happen. Instead, we will have a smaller tax increase from this two year period than when Longrie was in control (even if the council uses the 5% maximum levy to the fullest); the number of lawsuits has dropped to what's normal for a city; the mass exodus of experienced city staff has ended; etc.

There's one example of the lies. His company does home remodeling. I can't think of the last time the city owned a residence, let alone remodeled a kitchen or bathroom in one...

This election is a victory of truth over lies and the people who built their political careers in Maplewood telling them.

Second, Rossbach has stated that he will close fire stations, Parkside area and Battle Creek area and WILL sell park lands to fund development.

Wrong! Not even close to the truth. 1/2 hr at the beginning of the meeting with a max of 5 minutes/person. If more needed to speak then they had to wait to the end of the meeting.

The reason the meetings went long is because Longrie discovered all kinds of miscues by the city administration that needed to be dealt with.

Wow, just more twisting of truths to scare people. First Will has no say over normal buidling permits. Those are issued by staff with no input from City Council on who gets them. If a request goes to council it is because the home owner/builder wants to do some thing that is not normally allowed by the City Code. The neighbors then show up and commnet on how they feel. Then the entire council votes on the proposal after listening to the applicant and the neighbors.
Second there has been no talk by anyone to close fire stations. This is a scare tactic that was tossed out to divert peoples attention from the real issues. The City has looked to it's neighbors to figure out better ways to delver all services. I think that maybe the people starting this rumor have over looked the fact that since 2001 the fire and police budgets have increased by 50%. The number of police and fire employees have gone up by 17 people. The amount that is was spent last year on the Police, Fire and streets was more than was collected in property taxes. These are the real facts.
Maybe the people who are making these mistruths up are actually the ones that would do something like this if they or their freinds were elected.

Mayors have NO power over Building Officals and the approval of Building Permits! This statement is laughable!

You are so right. Rossbach and company had a misinformed non-Maplewood union buy the election for them. Wake up before we are all priced out of our homes.
