Stop & Shop to lay off 850 in North Haven

About 850 workers at the massive Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. distribution center on Montowese Avenue were stunned to learn Monday they will lose their jobs by midyear.

The story going around is that AHOLD, the parent company of Stop & Shop, also owns Preferred Real Estate Investments. So AHOLD sold the Stop & Shop warehouse to itself. Preferred Real Estate Investments is leasing the warehouse back to Stop & Shop for 5 years. Stop & Shop is contracting with C & S Foods to open a warehouse in the Stop & Shop warehouse which will be "the third party supplier" to service Stop & Shop stores. Its a matter of paper shuffling and no true financial gain. The gain will be that Stop & Shop will not be paying union wages and benefits. After the 5 years are up, Stop & Shop can then take over the warehouse under its own name as non-union.

STOP & SHOP is money hungry and does not, nor did they ever care about any of there employees!! The employees are all at a loss, there are not 850 jobs out there to employ all that have been lost. I will never shop at STOP & SHOP AGAIN!!! I have all that I know doing the same. Hopfully this BOYCOTT will work!!

i was a driver out of the chicopee ma distribution center for 10 years and they did the same thing to us back in 2002.royal ahold,the company that owns stop&shop are from the netherlands so they can care less about the workers over here.all they want to do is break the union and have this other scumbag company c+s do there distribution for them.i feel bad for the employees in no haven,i knew alot of them.i will never shop in there stores again and i hope alot more people will do the same.good luck to everyone in no haven.

STOP&SHOP sucks. I don't shop there because the prices were high then and it's even higher now. I used to be a security guard back then under another company and the things they used to add to our work and make us do. It wasn't even fit for a dog to do. Rats running around all under the trucks in the back. I ended up quitting and told my company I will never return back to that hell hole. I know someone who works there and him and his wife just financed a car last year. How the hell will they pay for that without a job?

my boyfriend worked for stop and shop both in north haven and now he's in mass and he says that they are no better than north haven they are still doing the same sh** up there. they don't plan to give raises until 2 years from now and alot of people have stopped lives that they had just begun here just to go work for them and i don't that it was fair to the people that had just bought houses to have to move their family like that and start a whole new life up there. stop and shop didn't give a damn about their workers without their workers in north haven there wouldn't be stop and shop.

The only ones to blame are the morons at C&S for destroying good paying jobs by not working union and it's mainly the fault of the truck drivers at C&S, if they would join the union, the warehouse workers could strike and receive support from the drivers. The trucks stop and the warehouse stops.

The ignorant truck drivers in this country do nothing to improve their plight an are bringing down the whole working class.

Wal-mart figured out if they take care of their drivers they can keep the unions out of their stores and warehouses. As long as the trucks will roll, the workers have no leverage. If a store went on strike and the trucks refused to cross the pickets lines,management would have to bargain with the workers. As long as the trucks will roll,they can bring in replacement workers and morons without jobs will gladly cut somebody elses throat for a $1.00
They will pay scabs $20.00 an hour to keep the stores & warehouses operating and would pay truckers to supply stores from other warehouses if a warehouse went on strike.
The morons truckers would jump for joy hauling the stuff further and making more money and the company will pay whatever it takes to keep the union out.

stop and shop is offering buyouts to the workers in the stores now.they wan't it hush hush for fear of bad publicity.1,500.00 for every year of service capping out at 40,000.00 and a year of benefits excluding,department heads,meat cutters,night crew chiefs,pea pod and lead clerks(probably assistants). ahold is under a lot of pressure by stockholders to sell all their american assets and concentrate on their european assets but they don't wan't to do that because they make two thirds of their money in america.the best thing for the workers is if they did sell because the pressure by stockholders will cause them to do drastic things to increase the value of the stock.if any ahold person is reading this if i owned a company as long as everyone is making money and the bills are paid then it is good the problem is all the stockholders have all their money invested and and own most of the shares and they dictate change at all cost.the goverment should regulate stock sales to prevent the owners who own all the shares to destroy companies to become rich!!!

Wake up folks and Go Union!Truckers and Warehouse workers are the backbone of this nation.Without them the shelfs of the supermarkets would be empty and wildcat strikes would bring them to thier knees.Contact your union representitves today.There are federal laws that protect your jobs from corporate bullies that intimidate and mistreat workers that attempt to go union.If you don't the supermarkets and distribution centers will continue to treat thier help unfairly and you won't have anyone to go to bat for you.The good men and woman that work hard to keep these stores and distribution centers going better do it soon or you will all be working more for less money and benifits.Human resources will do nothing for you ,but Unions Will,stand up for workers rights!

i work at the stop and shop in fall river mass. I hope that our store don't go out of buisness and lay off people. I've been working there for 5 years and my sister has been there for 9 years since it opened. They say our stop and shop is doing fine for buisness so we should be ok. you shouldn't boycott stop and shop. All your doing is helping them go out of buisness and laying off alot of people that don't have to be. So please continue shopping with us at Stop and Shop in fall rver mass and everywhere else. After reading many of the comments on this blog,(Poor spelling and poor English)it is apparent to me that some of you need to go back to school and further your education. Once you do that you may be able to get a better paying job. Unions are not the answer. Education is.

There is only one word for everybody. GOD,
should be the only answer for all of you.I am sorry to hear about the Stop & Shop layoffs. I used to work in 4 different retail stores,Kings, Caldor, Badlees & Lechters. I was out of work, not for a layoff, the stores closed!! Took myself back to school at age 55 and graduated with a 3.97. Worked at a job that I went to school for and just recently I was laid off for lack of work. It wasn't me, it was the place itself. So dust off your sandals and ask the Lord what you should do and you will be suprised. I have no job as we speak but will be going for my second interview. I pray for anyone out there looking for work, keep the real boss in first place and the rewards will be yours. Don't give up, he has never given up on any of us.

Stop & Shop is one of the leading grocery stores around. How could such a large company do what they did to one of the highest grossing distribution center around. Those guys really worked hard and gave all to that company. I don't believe that Stop & Shop will ever have another distribution center like the one in Connecticut. I know that I will not shop in any Stop & Shop store. I would like to see more people jump on board and go elsewhere.

It really hurts me to see former Stop & Shop retired employees shopping in the stores after what the company did.

Do you realize that the cost of an education these days? Do you know how much it costs to go to school and obtain a degree? And what makes you just assume that these people are uneducated just because they work at S&S? You are a snob. And if you would get your head out of the rock your living under maybe you would realize that the raises and the promotions of the 1990's are not happening anymore. But the cost of living and everything else keeps going up so it is no wonder these people are upset. You would be well advised to keep your judgmental opinions of other people (whom you don't even know) to yourself.
