It takes a very small person to beat up a homeless man.
That depends entirely on the homeless man....in some cases a small person might get THEIR butt kicked.

Yes, Uncle Bob is a homeless alcoholic. With that said, he is a kind soul that would give the dirty, stinky shirt off his back if it would help someone.
He recently hitch-hiked to Colorado on numerous occasions and stayed on our couch. When we were 7 year old kids Uncle Bob would show up on his beat up old motorcycle to support his nephews in little league baseball.
He is a sharing, loving, funny individual. His stories could rival those of any extreme traveler. Yes he has personal problems but he never deserved this type beating at the hands of some coward(s). He is a skinny, weathered man that really couldn't hurt anyone.
He has friends and family all over the US that are extremely concerned for his life at this point. Please find the punks that did this.
Long live Tio Berto(Uncle Bob)!

I feel sorry for the homeless in this city. They have strict rules about how/where they can ask for money if they want and now they can't even sit on a street corner without some punk beating them up. This city has problems and it's sad.
Get a job and they won't be sitting on the corners....

Sounds like his "friends and family" need to step up and get Uncle Bob off the street.

Here we have another shameful shocking episode in a third-world class city that's overrun with crime, violence, and lawlessness. The city leaders are aloof, elitist, and disinterested. Law enforcement is conspicuously absent.
On the city's website we see the words "A Great Place to Live for All of Our Citizens".
That's a lie!
The police forces in America are "Reactionary" not defensive. They have to wait for a crime to be committed before the laws they are bound by will allow them to remove potential criminals from the streets. If and when they do anything else to actually prevent a crime from happening, they are slapped with law suits, reprimands, accusations of profiling and brought to task for doing their jobs by the same people who ask, "Where were you when the crime was happening?"
The police cannot be everywhere, Our personal rights and freedoms see to that. For those of you who have never been assaulted before, you must understand something very basic, It only takes a few moments to attack someone. It does not take long to nearly kill a person. It only takes a lack of morality and a cold heart. I know many of the police officers in C'ville. They care what happens here and most of them do their best to stop the bad guys. The problem is, they are heavily out numbered and the bad guys get free lawyers.
I have never been assaulted by a nice, law abiding citizen. I was rescued once by a homeless man.

There are groups of black kids that roam the downtown area seeking out weak, defenseless white people to attack. There were about 15-20 incidents of this a couple summers ago, but they were, for the most part, swept under the rug by the city and local law enforcement. The same is happening now.
I have no idea if this is what happened to this man, but I am willing to take that bet.

I too hope they find out who did this. It takes a weak person to harm the homeless. Maybe it is time one of the nephews let him on the couch again.

I understand your feelings. Uncle Bob has chosen this lifestyle. Everyone has tried. He is pushing 60 yrs old and he makes his own decisions.
He didn't wake up on Friday and decide to catch a beating. He was assaulted. I don't give homeless people money but I am compassionate towards them. Please show some compassion.

Thanks for your thoughts. He always has an open invite anytime assuming he recovers from this senseless assault;-) He is more of a traveling hobo than your typical homeless beggar. He does lots of odd jobs(working on farms etc...) as he has traveled/hitch-hiked the country for the last 30+years. Bob is an awesome guy.

He is more of a traveling hobo by choice than a homeless guy. He has been living this way for as long as I remember(30+years). He is a good person. Please be compassionate. If you ever met him in Charlottesville and talked to him you would know that Bob is a fun guy. He always enjoyed hearing peoples stories and learning about different people.

For those of you who think this is a joke, it's not. I had a family member who was beaten on Main Street and left for dead. It is not a good feeling to have anyone attacked for any reason. I hope the police department doesn't take it for granted because he is homeless. People who do things like this are cowards and have a special place waiting for them. If they think it has been hot in Charlottesville with temperatures in the high 90's, wait until they reach the gates of hell. I pray that the victim will recover and that he will have some recollection of the thugs that did this. He is in my prayers.

So why do you have to stereotype that it's a group of black kids? When I visit the downtown mall, I see groups of black and white kids having a good time. I'm not sure what time you are on the mall, but I don't tend to hang out during the late hours. Maybe next time you see this group of black kids roaming the downtown area, you will call 911 and report it to help alleviate problems like this. That will be better than taking bets on who it was that attacked this victim.

I just don't understand how or why something like this happens. This great divide in Charlottesville is only growing bigger. I'm sure anyone in Ivy could care less about what happens downtown, as long as they don't build a YMCA anywhere near them. With all of the BMWs and luxury cars I pass daily, there should be no homeless or hungry in this town. Next time you're walking around Mayor Norris drinking a $5.00 coffee, just think what could have been done with $4.50 of that.

It is important to keep a balance here. The media has programmed us with the word homeless and it is now about one step short of brainwashing.

A LOT of so called homeless men are in fact sex offenders that are no longer tolerated by their own families and you can see their pictures on the Virginia State Police website at the Sex Offender Registry. I encourage all to visit this website and see how many "poor dears" you recognize. Others are alcoholics whose rages and drunken binges are no longer tolerated by their families and so they have been cast out, to use an old phrase.

Many have criminal backgrounds that keep them from employment in most jobs around here.

I know many on the mall, by name, and they all have families that would gladly take them back if they could shed a few of their bad habits, so the term "HOMELESS" does not accurately describe the situations of most of these guys, at the very least.

Too many in this area allow themselves to be programmed by the "cause du jour" that the local naive journalists would have us all swallow hook, line and sinker. Before one cries too much over anybody it is extremely wise to view their court records. The career LOCAL drunks I know and talk to have all been in court dozens of times for, usually, small crimes.

Ask your police force how many of our "poor downtrodden HOMELESS transients" have been quietly extradited back to their home states to answer for crimes.

So let us not get too stupid when we try to hold the word "homeless" up as the grand cop out for so many that we see.

A man I know was badly beaten several years ago by the public library as he was sleeping in the bushes. Yes there are indeed young gangs that prowl the mall and delight in assaulting and robbing others. Sometimes they all pile on the bus system at one time and visit Fashion Square Mall and do something SO big that it can't be soft pedaled by the media no matter how hard they try---------

Those members of the public that have rudimentary sophistication know that the reason why our "homeless" stay on the street is that places like PACEM, Salvation Army, Moore Center and others DO NOT ALLOW people to drink in their confines due to the violence factor. That is why they stay on the street instead of sobering up long enough to gain admittance to shelter.

Those who love to bemoan the "homeless" seem to be blissfully unaware of the realities of the situation. These members of the public need to talk to the counselors at the Moore Center, Salvation Army and others and learn how the system works.

I know of no other place in the country that practices social overcompensation to the extent that this town does so the term "Homeless" has very little, if any validity here.

The campfires I see in the Pantops Mountain forest tell me that there are many "homeless" men visiting Charlottesville that would rather sleep in a small tent and carry a backpack rather than sign up for our city's countless social services and risk being noticed by the police.

A large part of the public seems to have willingly shed their sense of self preservation and the rest of us need to recognize those that have this tendency so we can avoid being near them---for our own safety--

If memory serves me correctly there was an elderly gentleman named Roy Gentry who suffered a beating near the railroad tracks and died shortly afterwards.

I wonder if there might not be a possible connection?

These are sad cases but let's be honest with ourselves.

How many of YOU out there think that it is a good idea to be on the mall at, say, 1,2,3 or 4 in the morning? Not me, that's for sure.

There is the argument that any person should be able to go anywhere, anytime that they want to! Well, in a perfect world this might hold true but most of us have the common sense to know that we do not live in a perfect world---especially during the dark hours on the downtown mall. The mall has generated too many bad headlines in recent years but there are still people that do not mind putting themselves in harm's way, and unless you are a cop that has the training, sidearm and equipment I recommend that you don't do it!!!!!!!

This guy made that mistake and I hope that none of you out there do likewise!
