I have 4 wheel drive and ALL main roads into Palmyra was closed off by vehiciles stuck in the middle of the roads. There were NO emergency vehiciles in sight. I was forced to go back into Charlottesville and stay in a hotal or freeze in my truck!! NOT one emergency vehiciles were at any of the cars pile ups.I tried to get home for 5 hrs. We are talking Rt 250 , Rt 53, Rt. 15, 729 & Milton. These passageways home should have been maintained. whatever it took. Salt and plows, and tows trucks to help keep these roads clear SO PEOPLE COULD GET HOME! VDOT Did not do their job!!!

There were abandoned cars just sitting on 29 North blocking traffic and causing accidents. I called 911 and the sheriff and neither would do anything about these obsticals to help those just trying to get home. I was really disappointed.

They were prepared for for snow but not the rapid accumulation. I used to drive a plow on 64 years ago. The routine was to wait until a couple of inches of accumulation and then head out. Whatever the case I'm not sure they're equipped for a major front like this and folks aren't prepared either. We all got caught with our pants down.

I am sorry to hear about your weather in Virginia. I am from there and have relatives in Scottsville and in Charlotesville. I now live in Chicago and we haven't had that much snow here since I moved. Y'all have had weird weaterh this year. For people complaining about VDOT, how could they be prepared for this catastrophic storm! Chicago would be screwed with these blizzard conditions and high winds you are having. Be thankful that it is not 0 degrees out there. I know it sucks, so I will be praying for you guys. Sometimes you just need to stay home. I don't know how much warning you had, but I know people in VA can't drive well in snow and since there has not been this much snow this fast since I was in college in the 80s, VDOT is out of practice. At least you don't have corrupt IL politicians!

I left Pennsylvania at 7:30 pm and actually made to home to C'ville @ 2 am. Thank the Lord VDOT was plowing the roads or I would have been stranded - who knows where - or possibly dead - who knows where! Thanks to the kindness of two strangers who tried helping me and the policeman who pushed my car when it was stuck on 29 near Walmart. Praise the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit for keeping me and my car safe.

If you ask me, our fastest growing minority is the stupid!
And here's hoping the power lines to your home are ripped out due to the weight of the snow so you can plan ahead and fend for yourself.

that was a good one! If the dummies would just read the article, they might notice that they were STRANDED MOTORISTS, not the homeless jobless people they must heartlessly think of when they see the word "shelter". Maybe they'll get stuck in the snow themselves, & have to fend for themselves because sometimes you have to be in the other persons shoes to feel a little compassion - or they could read the articles & not jump to conclusions...idiots.

I'm sure we can have your taxes increased so that the county and city can afford to make sure you have full access to your own personal emergency service. Come on people you all act like emergency services were sitting on their butts drinking coco.

My father along with other motorist has been stranded on route 29 south in Albemarle since 7pm Friday 12-18-09 and is setting to spend another night there. Where is the national guard and why have I not heard any updates on this news since 6AM?

Have you or they called the state police to report their location, the national guard had started helping people in Nelson Co this afternoon. I hope they get to shelter soon.

Their reply was "we can't help that motorists do stupid things." They knew people had abandoned the jeep in a major road way that was causing problems for hours. When I passed the jeep it was coverd in snow so it had been there for a while. They should have had it towed so it was no longer putting other motorists in danger and ticketed and billed the owner of the jeep. I'm pretty sure the hundreds of people that were put in danger by the idiot that left the jeep there had paid their fair share of taxes to have that jeep moved out of our way by the county so we could pass by safer!!! My neighbor's daughter still hasn't made it home yet!!!
