While I agree with many of the points in the editorial, I feel that certain factors regarding Peter Mathews' qualifications in running for Congress in the 37th District may have been overlooked.

I think I agree with Maureen Moak's letter "Pensions Were Earned", although I am somewhat confused about her point of settling for "low" pay which results in "nice" retirement benefits because retirement pay is based on salary as well as length of service.

People who busy themselves thinking about the elements that motivate men, including factors that best motivate him to preform work, have proposed various models in explanation.

One of the best models is probably that of Abraham Maslow who, like Jesus, made the observation that man does not live by bread alone. According to Maslow, man has certain needs. Food and shelter are the most basic.(in our society we call that the need for money) Maslow proposed that, after man fulfills basic needs necessary for survival, he then develops needs of a higher level. Those needs then progress from security needs on up to some nebulous state of "self actualization". Even were it possible to define, few would likely ever achieve self actualization because even were it achievable, everyone would define it differently. Between the need for security, and the undefinable need for self actualization, though, is the need of self esteem.

In order to frustrate man from achieving his higher level needs so that they might more easily manipulate him, the Big Taxers and the $$$ Big School $$$ thugs and their Big Union Boss accomplices convince workers, such as cops and other city employees, that they do not really want to fulfill higher level needs of self esteem. Rather - they tell them - what they really want is to fulfill more lower level needs. That is to say, money. As Maslow explains, though, once man fulfills a lower level need, additional inputs have little positive effect to serve as additional motivators. Most of this money eventually works its way into the pockets of those who operate this scam in any event.

Just ask yourself. Were you a cop being attacked by a berserk rampaging violent out of control possibly AIDS infected drug crazed bloodthirsty criminal, would your primary motivation be higher pay or basic survival needs? Were you to successfully defend yourself against such a crazy, would your self esteem be damaged when "the community" demands you be fired, imprisoned. or hanged on the spot? Some of these options are more often than not supported by the corrupt political-legal-Big Taxer complex itself. What would motivate you to leave the Long Beach Police Department under such circumstances? The answer is unlikely to be that the pay is too low.

The cops and the firemen and other city workers are no less victim than are the other overburdened Long Beach taxpayers. All of us serve as footballs to be kicked back and forth past each other by the Big Taxers.

The Big Taxers made complete fools out of the decent taxpayers who do not smoke tobacco. They promised - were they to join them in support of imposing even more outrageous punitive tobacco taxes on the decent taxpayers who smoke tobacco - budgetary problems would be forevermore solved. Now these decent trusting taxpayers who do not smoke tobacco are being targeted by the Big Taxers and the $$$ Big School $$$ robbers who believe they can keep on tricking them. These decent women and men who do not smoke tobacco should not forget.

Cops, firemen, other city workers, decent taxpayers who do not smoke tobacco, and those who do, must join in one accord to RESIST shameful and repugnant Big Taxer schemes to inflict even greater tax abuse on us one and all. Lets show the Big Taxers and the $$$ Big School $$$ thugs that we are on to this little game they are playing. Tell your overtaxed Long Beach friends and neighbors. Just say NO! NO! NO! this November!

You are assuming that cops, firemen etc. are residents of LB, many are not, consequently they don't have to be concerned about taxes LB residents pay. They get to receive without the pain of giving!
Maybe, when hiring, preference sould be given to LB residents!
