The son of Norwalk's police chief was issued an infraction in Darien last week on marijuana and drug paraphernalia charges after an officer saw him with a glass pipe in his mouth while he was driving in town, according to Darien police.
Evan Thomas Kulhawik, 24, was charged with possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is the son of Norwalk Police Chief Thomas Kulhawik. The father and son both live in Stratford.
Evan Kulhawik was driving on Post Road near Dickinson Road at 6:41 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, when an officer saw him with a glass pipe in his mouth, Darien police said. Kulhawik was trying to light the pipe, when he turned and saw the officer, at which point he dropped it, police said.
The officer pulled behind Kulhawik, and could see him trying to conceal items in the car, according to police reports. The officer could also see that Kulhawik was not wearing a seatbelt, police said.
He was stopped near Noroton Avenue, and when the officer approached the window he could detect the odor of marijuana, according to police reports. The officer asked for the pipe, and police said Kulhawik denied having one.
The officer told Kulhawik that he had a drug-sniffing dog in his car, at which point he turned over the pipe, according to police reports. He asked Kulhawik whether he had any other contraband in the car, and he said no, according to police. The officer reminded Kulhawik of the dog, and Kulhawik told the officer he had some marijuana in the glove compartment, according to police reports.
Police found a total of 3.6 grams of marijuana in the car, according to police reports. He was not found to be under the influence of marijuana, police said. He was issued an infraction on the marijuana and given a verbal warning for not wearing a seatbelt, police said.
"I was very disappointed to hear about it," said Chief Kulhawik. "I've spoken with him and he's taken responsibility for it. He's already paid the ticket, so hopefully this will be a learning experience, and we can move on
