I wondered if any other parents have had very bad experiences with the VP of Freshman's Mr. Liggio and the general way the school handles various issues. For example- though they have strict truancy guidelines, I was never called when my son was truant more than 10 times during the first semester, I never got a phone call from them. Fact is,I caught him at home one day when I arrived early from work, and I had to call and inform the school myself. They gave my son a Saturday detention when it was bitter cold temperature for not wearing his ID, when asked why I was never told about this, they just blow me off and try to find mores way to make themselves seem right, and make me look wrong.
I was warned by my own son at the beginning of the school year, when he overheard some of the faculty and the way they spoke to Parents in a very disrespectful manner. He warned me then that North Bergen HS does not care about what Parents have to say !

OH BTW I forgot to mention also that Mr. Liggio hung up on me mid conversation on the phone , then when I ask why he did, he straight out denied it, How is that for integrity lol.

I moved 10 years ago because I got nowhere from the school system. Not only did a principal lie to my husband and my face, but the superintendant did not even seem to care. The principal just had it out for us and was like a dog with a bone, trying to make our lives miserable

I am so glad you wrote , Formerly, That is exactly how I feel and I am trying very hard to get him transferred. If you ever try to disagree with the Faculty they will have it in for you and yes will try to make your life miserable and there is not much you can do! The principal is an egomaniac and actually yelled at me at the end of our meeting and acused me of "not caring about my child's education ". I am afraid that even though with the recent arrest of many of NJ's corrupt officials, they is a lot more work needed to be done about the way many things are handled here.
They are corrupt and protect each other, there is not much in the way of fairness or justice it seems.

I am not saying what they did is right or wrong...but what I do see from these posts is WHY...teachers/administrators. .."circle the wagons". They "try to make our lives miserable"...and the inferences that they (schools) are "corrupt"... label...label..label and place all the blame at the schools feet.

Morgana complains about the school never notifying her. Many attendance depts. are automated...a computer calls your phone. Does the school have the right #? Did your son delete the messages/take in the mail before you got home? Do they even make the calls anymore (especially with the budget cuts?)...you complain that the school doesn't take action on truancy but then you complain about when the school DOES act and gives your child detention...and I'm sure detention was assigned because of the behavior issue (no ID card which IS a safety issue...it shows who doesn't belong) not based on the weather. In regards, to the phone hang up...have you NEVER lost a phone call on a cell phone or work phone? So is it POSSIBLE that the call was dropped?(I'm not saying he did or didn't..I'm just saying look at the possiblities.)

Parents have a tendency to believe their children...it's natural. Well, children LIE...I don't care who you are...children are children and they lie to get out of trouble. IT drives me crazy when people believe a child over an adult.

Teachers have over 200 kids a day to worry about in HS...do you really think they waste additional time and energy "making lives miserable for certain students?"...get real....teachers have enough problems without making up some! Teachers go into this profession to help children not to make their parents lives miserable.

Parents who reach out to a child's teacher BEFORE there is a problem are the most successful. Parents who have discipline over their children are most successful. Parents who realize that children do LIE to get out of trouble are the most successful. Parents who realize that teachers don't try and CAUSE conflict with parents because they have enough issues to deal with are most successful!!

Mike, I am glad you wrote and I am guessing you work involves the Board of Education in some way but I am thinking not for this particular school. Your stance is similar to the ones I have encountered, " its not our fault it's tne parent and the child- lol
Let me correct you on some of your "arguments".
I wouldn't have wrote that they failed to contact me if I didn't know for sure it was an error on their part, and yes they did have the right contact info and no their calls are not automated. again I did not have a problem with this faux pas and I found the attendance person understanding and amiable , again it was the way the VP handled it.

I also know Mr. Liggio did hang up on me because he did it more than once and yes I am sure and yes he lied, the Principal lies also.
Let me say that I do know how difficult it is being a teacher and I do know there are some extremely fine examples of how the education system can work, luckily my son is now in that sort of environment surrounded by high quality gleaming examples, this has happened because he was transferred from this dismal and horrible place they call a school North Bergen HS !
It may seem impossible for you or any normal person to think they would have extra time to make a parent or child miserable but it does happen and NJ has a long history of corruption you have to know that !, it is questionable how some of these people even got their jobs, Some VP's do not appear to have much education, Mr Liggio was a football coach before getting a job as VP lol.!
One of the teachers in this school was arrested for possible involvement in a gambling ring which included money laundering and drug sales. This person still teaches here. Now he could in fact be innocent but I am not sure of this and we all know what can happen if we Know the right people sort of speak.
Mr. Tennaro the principal of this school is a very harsh man , he seems to love laying down his law without any regard for what is best for the child, he has been known for losing his temper and yelling at parents. If you check under rate your teacher.com , he has gotten a few hundred ratings and almost all are unanimously 1's ( the lowest rating) I know I am not alone in this. Not all schools are equal and although you may know and work with people who are fine and honest , not all people are that way.
NJ has a long way to go, the teachers and faculty cannot even be accessed through emails how far behind can you get?
So Mike although I appreciate your feedback, I do not think you know enough about this school to be able to comment correctly

I have been on the receiving end of school administrations. So to combat that. I volunteered at the high school. As a School vulounteer if have told off by high school students on numerous occassions. It is unbeleivable to me that students act as though the rules don't apply to them and act as though I have done something wrong for asking for a hall pass or for asking them to clean up after themselves in the lunchroom. It is easy to see why the teachers and administration take that attitude that you are complaining about As a parent I beleive it is my responsibility to teach my children to respect their elders and each other. If parents don't police their children can we really expect the school system to get anywhere with it. Why don't you volunteer at the high school so that you can see for yourself how the children act.

Keith, I do know how children can behave, They are very sensitive to their environment and often mimic or mirror how they are treated themselves. My child is in a benchmark school now and his behavior toward the faculty and teachers have changed greatly, this school is not crowded and has little security but every one is very nice with each other and respectful. This is because he is around high quality people and he knows he is also respected. Kids give out what they get back.

If you would spend a little time at your high school you might change your mind.

Very presumptuous of you Keith to assume that I haven't spent time there, Keith. FYI the name of the school is High Tech and it gets great reviews from both parents and websites who rate according to test scores etc. There are a few departments within the school and it's GREAT ! I have met his teachers, and the Principal I have seen what they offer ,my child tells me about his experience and we are both very happy about it.

Not the special school with smaller classrooms the public school that has to teach whoever walks through the door. I agree that our children would be served better by schools with a smaller student body but with budget constraints what they are this is not always feasible. It seems as though you would prefer to run away from the problems that exist in public schools and place all of the blame on the teachers and administration. I would like to remind you that the education of our children is primarily the responsibilty of the parents and that the teachers and administration are merely the tools that we use. Are you afraid to see how the children act toward the teachers and other adults that they don't know? All that I am suggesting is that before you criticize the teachers and administration in your school that you get involved long enough to see how rude and disrespectful the children can be.

I know how children can be, Children are also very sensitive to adults who have an attitude that they are superior simply because of their age and this is not the case. The world does evolve and teens especially are the forerunners of the new age.
Perhaps kids are disrespectful towards you because they can feel this from you, there is a lot of communication going on beyond words, maybe you do not respect the kids either?
Regardless, I started this thread about a specific area and you are not within this area at all, so your assumptions carry little weight. My son has been placed in a progressive and wonderful environment , you call that running away? if I ran away from the horrible school he was in before, can you blame me for that ?
As for the parent responsibility I was prepared to home school my child if it had not been for finding such a great place for him, I think every child deserves this type of opportunity, and by exposing bad schools and corruption within the faculty I am doing my share.
good day.

I do appologize if you feel that i have personally attacked you. however, you dont even know me and you have assumed that the children take their lead from me. In my defense I have already raised two honor graduates and I known by all of their friends nd "Mr. Keith", a sign of affection and respect. Further no less than eight of their friends refer to me as their other Dad. So you don't even know me and you have put me in the category of the arrogant overseer and the rudeness that i have encountered is in some way my fault. Do you really believe that this special school would still be special if there were 1 to 2 thousand students in it? I charge you with being part of the problem and not part of the solution. Sure you have a reponsibilty to your son but you are still part of the problem , not the solution

The problem is north bergen...The parents dont teach their kids wrong and right. also The security guards flirt with the cute girls and are cool to the "jocks" while the other kids are treated as if they are in a maximum security prison. It is very currupt, BUT! there are many teachers in the school that are very nice and when u respect them they respect you back... It seems that no one in NB knows the meaning of respect anymore... the kids in the hallway act as if adults are there to be disobeyed. im 18 and going to the school now and its overcrowded and it seems that every year it gets worse. i think that if the kids were taught respect, and if they stopped trying so hard to be like each other then the school would be better. So to all the parents blaming the faculty take a look at yourselves! because us teens we see how you guys act. and if youre never around we are gonna see how "adults" on the TV act. So teach your kids right and be there for them. and stop blaming other people for what you have caused.
