Next year each board member is gouing to get a new car paid for by tax dollars. Pembroke will say that is so they can more efficiently get to the board meetings and there will be fewer absences.

Seems like the schools are the only ones with money these days. What does that tell you while you're struggling to make ends meet? School spending is out of control.

If any of these board members had any gumption they would "donate" these computers back to the schools for the students to use. After all the parents have paid for them.

For two of my jobs it was a requirement to purchase your own computer or not bother to apply. Seems like if they want to be on the board they should furnish their own computer. What's next?

Whoa...hold up! We have to make major cuts but now the board members are going to get laptops or netbooks?! Why don't we take the money out of the materials budget and get the teachers around here laptops. The teachers are the ones doing the real work in this district. Or, why don't you purchase the SMART BOARDS that were promised to the teachers for this yea,r out of a grant that suddenly doesn't have any money in it. Where did that money go? I would also like to know what the educational value of purchasing laptops for board members is? How is purchasing laptops or netbooks for board members going to help the students education. That's right, I live in this town and I pay my taxes and I am tired of this district spending money on themselves. Something needs to happen here and it is going to have to come from us, or the district will continue to do what they want at the expense of our children and their teachers.

Fred, the schools don't have money, the district is making cuts at each school and then trying to justify spending that is unnecessary. I think we need a new money manager in this district!

Yup, we have the money in a line item in the budget. Let's spend it NOW! Otherwise, we might be under budget or, horrors, have this item reduced in the next budget.

There is a business manager. However, boards decide what is actually spent. Its a matter of law.

On the need to save money getting board packets to the board members -- they could pick them up at the office, or have them delivered to members. And only mail them when they can't be picked up or delivered. Its not rocket science.

You're right, we do have a business manager, however I feel we need a business manager who has an accounting background. Our business manager is also a business owner who seems to be getting a lot of business out of this school district. Time to make some changes at the top, don't you think?

For what school board members get paid, and considering the time they put in -- it is not reasonable for them to paying for computers. Now, whether they are actually needed is another question.

Getting business from a public employer you work for, would be a conflict of interest and illegal under law. I think you take this story to the editor. It would front page news.

One of my sons, and every other student in a class of about thirty has two of the same textbook for one class; one for school and one for home. This is very convenient, but my other son's honors class of well over 20 students must share the seven or so books in the classroom and read the text, posted chapter by chapter, online at home. I agree that something is very wrong here when the administration claims decisions are data based. Apparently not when purchasing textbooks.

it seems to me that in this day and age everyone has a computer. most families have more than one. so why is it necessary to buy board members computers? Last time i checked we had a technician employed by the schools that should be able to make an easy work around to get all board members online. i applaud the fact that we are attempting to save paper.. seems like everything could be put on a dvd and sent to board members for them to peruse. Just in case nobody has noticed the economy has tanked and we need to make due with less not more.

the abuses in the system are unbelievable. Is Mr Pembroke aware the economy in Bennington is tanking.

To allow personal computers to log into a secure site, the SVSU needs to spend money to allow a secure intranet. Its probably cheaper to buy computers. The real question is whether they are needed at all.

This seems like quite an expense for a 2-hour monthly meeting, especially considering they have spent the past several years cutting services to students with claims of "There is no money!"
Isn't this the same district with the "portable" computer labs, which are relatively useless in classrooms since it takes far too long to charge and start them up for a class of 20 or more children.
