3.5 MILLION in tax dollars. SEVEN employees.

Doors closing.

The $3.5 million refers to the amount of the Navy contract - which is a pittance - not the center's operating costs, which, of course, isn't reported here. Neither is the reaction from Leahy, the town board, the state legislative delegation, etc. Maybe they didn't have any because this isn't an old-boy business that sells lottery tickets and overpriced lunch meat. A real, community-responsive newspaper would look deeply into why this clearly necessary incubator for good-paying, top-tier jobs folded. Who benefitted? Who dropped the ball here? Why, SPECIFICALLY, did nothing come of the overtures to RPI and RIT, both of which are booming? Then again, this newspaper is analogous to overpriced lunch meat in its own way, too. There is a compelling story here to be told about a blow to Bennington's future if someone has the guts or simply cares enough to tell it.

You are most welcome. Standby, Vermont will probably be sending more your way.

This entire fiasco was based on the flawed premise that manufacturing will follow R&D laboratories. NONSENSE! Manufacturing follows stable, competitive, predicatble taxes, utilities and labor forces. Period. The concept that people would flock to Vermont to be near these 7 scientists was absurd from the beginning. I'm only surprised it took this long to fold.

I don't believe these local people can be considered "scientists", especially the head honcho that was once head of BCIC and created himself a position.

Funny how DUH banner didn't mention that either

Apparently NOT so; a colleague's wife works there, and would surely have told him if anything like that happened!

What's wrong with this picture?
3,500,000 divided by 7 employees equals
500,000 per employee of tax dollars

Biomass

52,000,000 divided by 30 employees equals
1,733,000 per employee of tax dollars

Your math is a little off there bucko.

MicroTech moved into an already existing building.

The biomass boiler plant has to have several studies done, it has to be permited - they don't give those away, the land has to be purchased or leased and the plant has to be built. In addition to the jobs at the plant, there will be logging positions, trucking, various services needed, a little more incentive to manage forest land and a little more income to landowners.....etc., etc., etc....... so I'd say you are comparing apples to oranges, as usual.

The biomass plant will generate electricity and wood pellets. What did MicroTech produce?

Mark Sheppard served, 4 years in the Vermont State Senate. It was those sad, socialist libs that love their Peter Welch, that did not get him elected to Congress. Oh well Vermont continues on her Merry Way. "Don't Worry be Happy"

He didn't lack for votes when he ran for the Vermont Senate from here. He got delusions of grandeur and quit.

Mark did not quit for the sake of quitting. He quit because he ran for US Senate.
