To put these lines back into service for passenger trains you are probably looking at $5 million per mile of track..... They restored a 7 mile stretch of track in Lackawanna Cutoff in NJ and it cost them $36 Million back in 2008.... Add about 20% to that figure in todays market....

This little cash sucking endeavor will probably cost each resident in Vermont about $30,000 and the fcking hilarity to it all is that it's not even high speed rail service.... Their plans call for sharing the lines with freight trains and if you have ever had the opportunity to experience that nightmare you might as well bring back coal fired steam engines.... If this train reaches speeds in excess of 40mph I'll kiss your ass.....
Add to this Mr and Mrs Treehugger, and how many billions of dollars do you suppose will be spent in court fighting the environmental impact to the grey squirrel and nymphalidae butterfly????? Case in point, Rt#7, Vermont's Super Highway of the 60's, oopppps 70's, oopppps 80's, oopppps 90's......
Now to answer your question Elmer, I'm for public transportation as a means for those who don't drive, but I'll be damned if I'm going to pay for a system that's losing money year after year...... There is not a train service in the world that is not subsidized by the government, because they're all losing money..... As long as the Feds have been an anachronism to Amtrak, they have consistently lost money and are in need of major upgrades.... Until rail service is privatized I don't see any improvements in sight and they are running it into the ground just as they have to the postal service....
