It would be a good gesture for the City of Chicago to cut back a little bit in the extent of the celebration. Maybe the Fireworks display does not have to be more spectacular than last year. Maybe it could be 10-15 minutes shorter.

This is a HUGE event for the city. It draws a Million or more people and help the Taste of Chicago attendance. IT would not be a good idea to cut the event. Of Course the main reason is to show pride for our country and too many clowns are forgetting that we still live in the best country in the world!

Why doesn't Chicago cancel the fireworks display on July 3d! We already have a fireworks display on Navy Pier on the 4th of July....Hmmm, sounds like a good fiscal plans!

Fireworks are a waste of money, let the people who like them pay for them. This 4th should be a day of mourning anyway, the country is being destroyed by the scum of the earth, what is there to celebrate?

Why not cancel the fireworks and just ask the gangbangers at the taste to fire their guns into the air.
I hope it rains all day and night!

Sadly this cancellation of fireworks is going on all across the country. Fortunately, it is something we can live with.

This is one event that should taking place every year! That dosen't mean that it has to be better than the prior years event. It sure seem like we are loosing everything that this country was built on. Our car industry, Farming, Manufacturing and yes it seems like Baseball is catering to more and more non US citizens. Soon we wont have any pastimes at all.

Everyone is cutting back on expenses - individual, governments and corporations. In case you had heard, there is a recession. the City has a big hole in its budget. Only idiots or the chemically impaired continue spending when they haven't got the money. I am not even talking about eliminating it but just cutting it back as an example of fiscal responsibility. That would actually enhance our status. However the "geniuses" at city hall are not going to do that . "Bigger is better eve if it is Bankrupting" is their motto.

Of course some people has an even better idea - just have one fireworks display instead of two on consecutive nights. That was so realistic and rational that i had to take a moment to catch my breath from laughing. Chicago is going to continue that way it has for the past two decades - bigger and bigger inspite of the cost. This makes us look like fools not the best nation in the world

And in all of these cities, towns and villages that can't afford a municipal display there will be hundreds if not thousands of individuals and families who have spent thousands of dollars on their own supplies, including M-80s and M-100s, etc., that will go on into the wee hours of the morning with absolutely no regulation or safety standards.

If the police would simply start enforcing the law and confiscating illegal fireworks, every municipality in America could have an adequate supply for an hours long display.

Unfortunately, North Riverside also will have no Fourth of July festivities this year. That's a shame, the NR parade and fireworks were always a high point of the year for me.

Actually the "illegal" displays my neighbors put on are more fun than fighting the crowds to see a municipal display. Dienne: Get over yourself! The ban on fireworks in Illinois is just another example of nanny government. In states where fireworks are legal more people will be injured by riding bicycles and playing baseball on July 4th than by fireworks. Should they be illegal as well?

To all of you anarchists, I'm sorry, fiscally concerned citizens that have been ragging on government for the last 9 months, please shut up. The constant complaining only makes your groups look like do-nothing whiners that are just taking advantage of a bad economic situation to spew your political rhetoric.

I think the recession has proven that every government, business and person has to change their ways. Yet, the venom put forth into blasting government and their attempts to serve their citizens - and that is a governments primary task to serve its citizens - while trying to give their citizens what they want is just ignorant.

If all of you are so smart and have all the right ideas and think your motto of "throw the bums out" is so perfect, get up off of your lazy rear ends and get involved. Writing nasty little blogs won't change anything; getting involved will. My hunch is that once you get involved and see what the real world is like, you would do no better. But no, just sit there and make your angry comments because they really help!

And another thing, if you're going to post a comment, please learn how to spell and use proper grammar. When you cannot do this, it makes your lame comments even more ignorant!

Bring your own sparkler! Hey, don't laugh; Stengel's Yankees brought same to Comiskey the year Bill Veeck installed his exploding scoreboard. And the Yankos have always had class- witness what ARod did with the Palin kid in the seventh inning!

I guess you were'nt listening to the puppet master when he said, never let a crisis go to waste.
Don't you want change? Don't you have hope? Didn't you elect the current incompetent for change? Well, you got your change. Now you barry people should shut up and let the adults handle the problems, which barry is making bigger and increasing the number of them. Save your posters, people will want them as an example of why you should never vote for a democrat.
