Grants are monies that will be distributed to whichever cities/towns apply. Not applying means you pass up the opportunity to benefit from those monies which another city/town will benefit from. It's clear that [email protected] has no respect for higher education and that's her right as it is everyone's right to hold their own opinion -- it's denying others rights and choices that's the issue. Kindergarten is not daycare otherwise it would be called daycare and have the same state mandated rules and regulations as daycare, which it does not. Grant funding is not a no-strings attached "gift" -- there are requirements that need to be met in order to retain those monies and not have them revoked, which can be done if requirements are not met. Ignorance can't be argued against. I'm for choice and clearly [email protected] and others are for lack of choice. If you don't agree with their position they are threatened, which truly is the red flag sign of ignorance and fear. Everyone should have access to a decent education -- to deny that right, aside from being totally unjust, is also very narrow-minded. What's good for one is not necessarily good for all. Choice allows everyone to benefit from what best serves their needs and Dracut allowing good Grant monies to go to other towns without taking advantage of them is a disservice to the children of our community. Grant monies are available regardless of their applicants and recipients -- Dracut needs to take advantage of them instead of passing them up and losing out on their benefit. I am not against half-day Kindergarten programs or for higher taxes...I am for choice in education and for Dracut's children's right to a half-decent public education. Up to this point, Dracut residents choosing Full-Day Kindergarten and not securing a lottery spot for their child have paid for that privilege at area private schools or in supplemental education programs. I have paid for Kindergarten and have no problem doing so, however, I am completely offended by even the suggestion of allowing a "public school" in my community to charge tuition especially when it means surrendering tens of thousands in grant monies currently secured by the Full-Day Kindergarten Lottery Program. In this economy, Dracut has no good reason to throw away tens of thousands in grant monies. Tuition has no place in a public school -- any tuition paid should be to support an area private Kindergarten or supplemental Kindergarten program. Allowing public schools to charge tuition is a mistake that would stand to be paid for by future generations.

One of Elaine Espindle's strengths was her understanding of the grant process. She knew the value of grants and pursued them. Under her leadership, the school system had after school tutoring, summer MCAS programs and other resources that would never have existed without Dracut applying for grants.

Yes, she was less than popular in town and many found her off putting, but she knew what to do and she executed well.

Dracut has a serious shortage of grant writers. That's a problem that often gets overlooked and an investment that would more than pay for itself. Dracut is eligible for several grants not taken advantage of because of its lack of grant writers that affect many areas beyond Kindergarten. It really is a disservice to it's students and school community. For the sake of your students and school community, HIRE MORE GRANT WRITERS!
Good call - there's got to be money out there.
