In North Adams, a first in 26 years

After an historic 26-year reign, John Barrett III -- the state's longest serving mayor -- has lost his title.

This is a long time waiting VICTORY. Barret has over stayed his welcome, and has not done as much for the city as people would like to think. Now when the NEW MAYOR gets in, he has alot of investigating to do.We want to know why the city employees medical insurance is so high/ Could it be Good ol' Barrett has people on it that dont belong? i know that for a fact he does. and where is the money given to north addams to fix roads, side street, etc....Alcombright has his work cut out. This is going to call for a big INVESTIGATION by the STATE because Barrett has been extorting money. GOOD RIDDENS BARRETT!!! Never knew anyone as CROOKED as you! Alos Marie Harpin at the Comunity Action, who also sits on council should be investigated for stealing the Donations of food and toys that she brings home to her and her families. SHame in you Marie Harpin, and your a city councilor? Shame on you. you know what you are doing, and I hope alcombright sees right through your BS!!!!

Mayor Barrett, well done. You have taken a city that very very few had any hope for and turned it into something. You had every obstacle to overcome and you managed. Well done, the people of North Adams should give you a standing ovation. I do.

There are many good things that Barrett did. Only time will tell how many problems were hidden by his desire to avoid transparency in his administration on some issues. I will guarantee you right now that as sure as the Sun comes up this morning, the health insurance issue is far worse than any of us know, but we'll all deal with it.

In victory, Dick Alcombright has shown himself to be a gracious winner. While emotional, Barrett's concession statements were less so, though his supporters will disagree. But, IT IS OVER!

Dick's supporters need to not brag and be as gracious as he. Barrett supporters need to not complain and be humble in defeat.

Now is the time for this city to unite, put the ugliness of the campaign behind us, and get to where we need to be, and WANT to be. In church, I've never much liked the soloist, I've always liked the many voices singing in tune in the chorus.

So, starting today, let's combine all of our voices.

In response to concerned, you NAILED it about Barrett being Corrupt! We know that he will be gone, but now we have to deal with Ms. Councilor Harpin. Does she really have a haeart? Stealing from the food pantry that is meant for the needy, and yet she still brings it home to her house or her childrens homes!!! Shame on you Ms. Harpin. What a disgust to the community you are on the city council. Remember the donations of food , clothes, and toys are not for you. I knew right away you were a Barrett supporters by your knack for name calling. That said,I will ask you the same question I have asked other Barrett supporters-WHAT HAS HE DONE? You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. I don't often read these comments because I get so frustrated by the ignorant people who run their mouths on here.
Marie Harpin LIVES to help the citizens of North Adams. The people who speak ill of her are the deadbeats who she won't give handouts to, because she saves the resources for those who truly NEED it instead of giving it to those people too lazy to get a job. She is a wonderful woman with a heart of gold.
As for John Barrett, over the last 26 years, he turned North Adams around and everthing he did was in the best interest of the city. It amazes me how people continue to spew out rumors about a man who dedicated his life to helping that city. He may not have always made the popular choice, but he made tough choices that were in the best interest of the city when those decisions had to be made. He is a GOOD man and everyone who thinks otherwise should take the time to look at what he has accomplished, get to know him and really think about what they're saying.
I wish Dick Alcombright the best of luck and I honestly do hope he can do good things in North Adams. Dick is also a good man, I just hope he has what it takes to lead the City during what is going to be one of the worst fiscal years in decades.
