Where are the good and bad parts of town?

I am new and looking for an apartment. Went to look at one today and got a bad vibe of the neighborhood. Can anyone tell me where the better parts of town are? Or if it is easier, can you tell me the areas to avoid?
I would prefer an apartment on the right side of the tracks if you know what I mean.

It's all Chicago ghetto rejects on Northbrook Drive and Orlando, west of Main.
Don't rent from Shackman Enterprises, they are the Twin Cities $1 SLUM LORDS.
Also DO NOT rent from Young America Reality, the manager is a p*ick.
When I moved out of one of their apartments, I cleaned everything and even got the carpets professionally cleaned. They kept my $900 deposit stating that there was damage to the carpet in the living room and in one of the bedrooms.
2 months after I moved, got a bill from them for "past due" gas and water service, even though I had paid the water and gas bills the day I closed the accounts and had them put back in Young America's name, as per the rental agreement.
They refused to look at the receipts from the the gas co. and the water department. I'm glad I took pictures of the place before I moved out, at least I'll have that and the receipts if they ever take me to court.
