NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- A former Newport News Police officer was exonerated in court Tuesday afternoon when a jury found him not guilty of rape and sodomy charges.
In January of 2009, police arrested their then fellow officer, Christopher Miner and charged him with rape and sodomy. The charges stemmed from an alleged incident in Miner's home in December of 2008. A woman told police Miner forced himself on her.
The room erupted as the verdict was announced -- not guilty. Miner's friends and family cheered, among them, more than 10 Newport News police officers and detectives. Miner hugged his attorney Robert Lawrence and immediately began to cry.
There was one group of people missing when the verdict was read -- the alleged victim and her family were nowhere to be found.
The jury began deliberating at 11:40 a.m. Tuesday, after closing arguments. Christopher Miner, 38, stood outside of the Newport News Circuit Court Building smoking a cigarette.
An hour later, at about 12:40 p.m., the verdict came was read: not guilty on rape and sodomy charges. Outside the courtroom, asked Miner what he's going to do now.
""It's sad to say the first thing I'm going to do is go home," he said, laughing.
He laughs because for the first time in a year, he doesn't have to go home, having been on house arrest.
Lawrence will not let his client speak about the verdict because of an abduction charge pending in a separate case, but Miner's friends and family spoke for him.
"I'm so glad it's over. It's been a horrible, horrible year and he's gone through an awful, awful lot," said Sue Detorres, Miner's mother.
"He knew he didn't do anything wrong and held to it the whole time and you see what happened," said Trina McKeel, Miner's friend.
In court, a woman claimed Miner raped her in his home immediately after they finished having consensual sex in December of 2008. She did not file charges until six weeks later.
Miner said that they had had consensual sex in the past and that he never raped her. On Tuesday, the jury sided with the former Newport News police officer.
"If you read the law, it's got to be beyond a ponderance of a doubt and it wasn't. We had doubts," said juror Don Thompson.
Miner's attorney said he has no doubt that his client deserves full justice.
"We're negotiating with a lawfirm in [Washington] D.C. now about civil suits and we're taking them one step at a time," Lawrence said.
Lawrence says he and Miner will be back in court at the end of February on a pending abduction charge.

Doesn't look good from any angle. I don't think restating the arguments from either side will help a whole lot, because; the sordid details are just further emphasized by doing so.
There were enough other things uncovered to make the officer look pretty bad-off anyway and her reputation is pretty much compromised as well.
Sorry dude even innocent, neither of you,(cop or woman) come out of this exchange looking too clean.
It may be best to let this drop, before it gets any slimier.
In my opinion.

Try telling this to one of the Va. State Police motorcycle cops...LOL Oh by the way, the folks who are buying the most Harleys right now are actually some of the most successful people in society right now. Doctors, Lawyers, and so-forth. No shame in being a biker.

And I still say the whole situation is an affront to the eyes and ears of everyone who looks at it. Miner should have known better than to be caught out like he was, in my opinion.

Cops won't speak against each other generally, but I feel it is safe to say there are quite a few cops who wish Mr. Minor's PERSONAL PROBLEMS were not on full public display. This sort of thing is bad for public opinion, it makes them look bad. The public, right or wrong, can tend to see ALL COPS in the actions of JUST ONE COP.

It is my opinion that the whole situation looks bad from all of the angles it is presented, neither side gets a clear win here.
Many folks could have done without all of the sordid details in my opinion.

Y'all keep on the way you are going and we will see how believable I am, then, shall we?

Yeah, I might be stupid too, but at least I am not in the middle of an unnecessary muck-slinging contest whose outcome could easily negatively impact my life.

I will never understand why this mess was pushed so far! Fox, why couldn't you have just admitted that you were wrong about having Miner arrested? I hope Miner forgives you. There is no shame in standing up and saying you make a mistake Fox. The officers would respect you more. I think your a terrible leader.

Just so you get your facts straight...."V" as everyone refers to him, didn't go out and get warrants. Internal affairs was involved as was the Chief of Police. "V" couldn't do anything until he was given the "ok" by higher ups. It took a month for the investigation to be complete at which time the warrants were issued.
So far as Christopher E. Miner being terminated, his termination had nothing to do with the outcome of his trial with Gamble. He was terminated in December, waaaaay prior to the trial date. His termination was based, solely, on the FACTS that internal affairs acquired through testimony of women and fellow officers.
So before anybody goes spewing diarrhea out of their mouths....get it straight and know what your talking about. And if you weren't there the night of the "alleged" rape or the abduction of the second victim....shut your pie hole.
And you all were shut down because you underestimate me......
where is gamble the tramp. she hasn't been seen or heard from since shortly after the jury who heard the case indicated she was an idiot. too bad miner could't sue her as she is a ugly and a pitiful individual.

It is a sad situation all the way around and personally having been a former friend to one of the accusers and knowing her character, I am sure it was lies, she can remeber an event like that but not remember sleeping with someone's boyfriend after drinking, umm yes I would say less than credible. As for the other accuser my oh my what a tangled web we live in. Now as for the recent charges on Miner/Roush hmmmm since when does indecent exposure make you guilty of rape it doesn't. Not sure why he has done this but honestly it's rather funny. I know the area in which he lives and wow brave stunt to be pulled on a highly traveled main drag.

The only sick crap put on this blog are the people who defended the NNPD. People like Det. V who had only one goal; to arrest a police officer on his department so he could put a feather in his cap. He and the attorney handling these cases for the Commonwealth should be investigated and then fired. They are jokes and dangereous. I wish Miner only the best. He has spent a year of his life under a cloud for something he did not do. Walk in his shoes.
Do you still feel this way in light of recent developments?

being blacked out and maybe even of being drugged at the Sandbar not having any idea where you are or what you are doing has nothing to do with this story.
