There are 67 comments on the Press-Enterprise story from Sep 5, 2007, titled Recipe Exchange: Chile Rellenos from Gay and Larry's. In it, Press-Enterprise reports that:

“Part of the charm of Gay & Larry's was the fact that the meals all came served on very hot metal plates, some of which I have”

Sherri Anderson, of Riverside, came to the rescue of Shelley Moore, also of Riverside, who was searching for a chile relleno recipe similar to the one from the former Gay and Larry's Mexican Restaurant in ... via Press-Enterprise

Hurt, please understand that there area lot jerks out there. In this Twitter/Facebook world, people can and do say anything that comes to mind. You need to realize that it is pretty amazing that people, such as myself, follow this thread about a restaurant than has now been long closed. My family and I had many great experieinces at Gay and Larry's. I have almost perfected some of the recipes and have come close to replicating them at home. I hope that a cookbook is forthcoming. I did have the opportunity to meet your Grandmother, Trudy, on several occasions and can say that I only have vey positive memories about the encounters. Remember the good memories and discount the others. You have a legacy that you should be very proud of.

@JCS, I am very proud of my family and my grandmother. I do remember all of the great memories I have of her. I do realize that this social networking world can and do say hurtful things. I also know that when I responded to this thread, I was acting out of anger and hurt. I miss them so much. As far as replicating the recipes and almost perfecting them, I am glad you were able to do so as not many people can or even attempt to with the diversity of those recipes. Hopefully one day, the cook book will be published. In all honesty- I simply do not know is the only thing I can say as for that matter. Thank you for your kind words and continue to remember my grandmother for the loving sweet sharp tongued when necessary woman that she was.

I was reading posts in this forum about my grandmother and my uncle- who are now both deceased, and it sickens me to see that someone would go to the lengths to degrade the familiy's name and business that was open for 60 years and to say that it was less than good, is disgusting. Ano, My uncle Travis was not a theif, nor a drug addict, and it was not his fault that Grandma Trudy's house burned down. I will agree with one of the previous comments that it was in fact his 7 year old son at the time, and it was devastating to us all that everything was lost. I hope that everyone really understands that with the loss of Grandma Trudy it has been a struggle in getting the cook book published and I don't know that it ever will be, hence the reason no orders and exchange of money was ever conducted. Please if anyone has any questions, and you have a facebook page- try to contact my uncle Brian Lawson, as I do not keep in touch with much of the family any more. And please to the moron calling my Grandmother a BITCH- keep her name out of your comments and thoughts because she was a great woman who treated everyone like family. May she rest in peace.
Like so many, one of my fondest childhood (and adult) memories is dinner at Gay and Larry's. My entire family feels the same. It was a pleasure to find this site, then shocking to read such angry comments. I do not understand what is wrong with some people. To this day, I still fantasize about Gay and Larry's chili rellenos, tacos, salsa, and nachos. Would you consider releasing or publishing the recipes? I would be happy to pay you for these gems, perhaps in honor of Trudy and your Uncle Travis? And try to ignore the negative, although I know it's hard at times. Some people have nothing better to do; sadly they are all over the Internet. Please consider my request. I know I speak for 1000's of people all over the country. My very best.

I thoroughly enjoyed not only the food, but the staff. My favorite was old #12, cheese stuffed chili enchiladas. I would love to get the recipe. I think the chili's were of the 'Anaheim' type, but don't know for sure. Think I'm going to look on the web again for a recipe that hopefully comes close. Best Mexican food ever.

I also grew up on G N L ,s food and have tried to duplicate some of no not some of but just one recipe of course the great chile rellenos and I agree with you a 100% that whoever wants to talk shit about this restaurant can go to hell and die I have so many great memories of this place from when my parents were still married to when they were both divorced to going there with both sets of step parents to when my daughter was first born which was 27 years ago today it broke my heart litterly to find out this place had closed it just made me really mad when I read that somebody was posting bad remarks about a place that I loved so much. I just wanted to give my 2 cents and I'm one not post stuff on the internet but it just pissed me off to see some M F talking shit about some place and great people I grew up with I can still remember my favorite waitress since a child her name was Bea or B we asked for her every time my Dad was a veterinarian from riverside and he also was the biggest fan of GN L's. Thanks for letting me comment on the greatestmexican restaurant in the world

Mario, Pedro, Vincente, shall I continue? These were all ILLEGAL immigrants working there with out INS papers.
The new owner couldnt afford to opne it to serve food, there was TOO MUCH wrong with the building.
Trudy is a self centered bitch, her "employees" she meets with are her coat tail hangers on...Janet, Lucy, etc.
You sound like a truly bitter ex employee that was either fired or didn't get what you thought you deserved..... probably because Trudy saw through your BS!
All I know is that you are the only person with a bad word to say about these people. I remember the food. It was always good, fresh and we went there often. The place always had an A rating with health department.
This is a bunch of people that really liked Trudy, and this restaurant. If you have a problem.... take it elsewhere. Nobody wants to hear you here unless you want to make a positive contribution.
