Arizona march puts spotlight on shootings by border patrol

The march in Douglas, Ariz., aims to draw attention to a teen who was shot by a border patrol agent while trying to climb the international fence.The agent was being pelted by rocks.

The march is to place candles and flowers at the stretch of the border fence where Carlos Lamadrid was shot and killed March 21. Mr. Lamadrid was fleeing toward the international boundary in a pickup truck carrying 48 pounds of marijuana when, as he attempted to climb a ladder placed against the fence, a border patrol agent opened fire, according to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Department.

THE P.O.S WAS A FLEEING DRUG DEALER. Nothing wrong with shooting him.

Anyone throwing rocks at border patrol, police or American citizens, should also be shot. Anyone want to defend the rock thrower? Go ahead, give it a shot.

He was not the one throwing rocks, and he was shot in the back. I can't believe anyone would support this.

No, I said the p.o.s that was shot was a fleeing drug dealer. So I have no problem with him being shot.

I however have no problem with a person throwing rocks at a border patrol, or police officer being shot either. Do you think the officers should let them throw rocks at them? Or do you think its wrong for them to shoot the rock throwers?

I think the officer can defend themselves against rocks without using lethal force.

An officer also cannot use lethal force because someone is fleeing.

This officers actions are inappropriate, and I hope charges are filed against him. The fact that you approve of the young man being shot in the back says a lot about your character.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Law enforcement can not justify shooting anyone unless they feel that their life or the life of someone else is in serious jeopardy. If the officer gives the criminal a warning like "Stop or I'll shoot" and the criminal continues to flee, I believe the officer has the right to fire a warning shot. Shooting to kill is a complicated issue in these cases.

If he were shot in the front it could at least be suggested that he were a threat. Shooting someone in the back is a true act of cowardice, and a disgrace to this countries name.

It's gonna be complicated, for the BP officer that did it.

Not to endorse 'Flapatriot's' contentions, but I think if those Americans had attempted to flee their Iranian captors as the Mexican national was doing the border agent, they would have been shot. And if that same Mexican national who got shot by the US Border agent had instead been in Mexico, similarly fleeing Mexican Federales, I'm quite sure he would have gotten shot in much the same way.
