Historical building crumbles

A crumbling piece of history in one KOTA Territory town draws police barricades and questions about whether to tear it down.

I am not 52 yrs. old and live in San Diego, California. I grew up in Whitewood and have visited many times since leaving when I was a teen. We lived in the trailer park. Last time I was home, I was saddened that the school was now closed. I had so many times wanted to go during the school year since I work for San Diego Unified but just never made it back during the school year. I truly hope that the bar owners restore the crumbling building, I would hate to see my childhood memories of Whitewood, go away. You may email if you wish at [e-mail]

It is sad to now see the building. Consol now owns the old school and will tear it down for the coal and gas underneath. IDA practically gave it to Consol. Consol has promised to put up an empty community building in place of the school with a walking track and play ground. The community has asked for the building to be equipped with a gym and a weight room. But so far Consol won't agree. A tourist railroad project had been started by Buddy Fuller, but that project has also been scrapped. There is a lack of community support in the Whitewood area, people do not want to see change and lack motivation. Consol has torn up the community with gas wells and the government does very little to support peopple. We need an Erin Brockovich in Whitewood.
