i was told from an official that the police golf carts are to be used for parking meters and for parking infractions. why are the carts constantly driving up and down the road with the chief only in the drivers seat? that's the only time i see one driving by. i've never seen a cart give out a ticket. especially at food lion where there are cars parked in the front. any answers?

Wrinkles, Food Lion etc, are private parking areas. Police have no jurisdiction unless a crime is committed there. Golf carts cant go across 205 yet.

Dah, Wrinkles -- Golf carts can't go to the Food Lion. I guess the official didn't tell you that! The new police chief is doing a great job here in Colonial Beach and if he is driving the golf cart -- he is being seen in the town. Congratulations to the the Colonial Beach Police Department because they did a awsome job the festival weekend and have been doing a great job every day since Chief Hawkins arrived.

gotta say I agree. It certainly does seem that Hawkins is doing a good job. Yet, if we paid for two golf carts for the police department it would seem in our best interest to have the other one buy doing something productive. I mean in the longrun they have to justify themselves, the golf carts. The same way that the cylcing police contingency will have to show that the time and expense put forth was worth it.

Just thought you'd like to know as of July 1st you will be able to cross 205 in a golf cart.
By the way I support Chief Hawkins and all he is doing for this town. http://www.journalpress.com/default.asp... |

We can go across 205, but only to McDonalds, we have no way to get to the shops on our carts.
Oh, Chief Hawkins is the best Chief we have ever had. An I noticed the officer are friendlier and happier. They wave as they go by. Their PR is paying off. |

I just had to look into this. Do you know that half of the 12 sworn officers are new for this year? The new people seem to have brought a wealth of experience with them. The Chief is young, educated and with over 12 years of law enforcement experience. Officers Brown and Gray came from Westmoreland County, Brown with 4 years and Gray with nearly 25. Officer Webster (the School Resource Officer) has over 40 years experience! Most with Charlottsvile PD. Officer Wells came with over 20 years with the DC Police where he was a Senior Detective. Officer Parlett came back to Law Enforcement after a brief hiatus. He was formerly with Colonial Beach and Westmoreland County. This all could add up to be the cause of the recent "revival" of our Police Department.

Glad to see so many people supporting our new chief. I am also very supportive of Chief Hawkins. But there were a lot of nay sayers on here in the beginning. Hope some of those were the ones now supporting the Chief. He is doing a great job by hiring good help, trying to keep them happy, and especially the rapport he has with the County and State law enforcement. We have a police presence now which we have never had before.

I'm really glad we have Chief Hawkins in C.B. I think he is doing a fantastic job!

Your new chief is realy a fine piece of work. He is also doing a good job over here in Port Royal running his moonlighting business. Why dosen't your town pay him a decent salary so he dosen't have to work two jobs?

Porter, Say What?????
Someone explain what his moonlighting business is. |

Come on Porter, what do you know? I've studied the department and it's personel and have come up with nothing like you allege. The entire department is terribly underpaid. Maybe they all should be moonlighting! Did you know that the guy who delivers your pizza makes more than an Officer here who is charged with protecting your life and property?

A pizza delivery guy making more than the officer who's supposed to protect and serve is an outright tragedy. We could afford to pay our officers more, have more amenities and most importantly fix the disaster that is Colonial Beach if WE WOULD RAISE TAXES!! Yes, I know... who can afford to pay more taxes?? I really can't but I also understand that taxes are the Town's income and when the Town doesn't have substantial income, it can't afford to pay decent salaries. Or, instead of raising taxes, why don't we try to lure in a large business or corporation that could occupy some Town-owned property and let them increase our tax base. When's the last time our Town Manager or Mayor attended a municipal trade show? There are businesses and large corporations who set up booths and are showcasing the fact that they would like to relocate or expand. Managers and Mayors from cities and towns all across the US attend these trade shows to lure in large business to increase the tax base. But do you think our Mayor or Town Manager attends these types of shows? Heck no!

Porter, just to confirm I asked the Chief about a second job. He indicated he was working extremely hard at being Chief and had no other employment. So to be polite I will say you made this up, to be truthful I will say you just plain lied. For CB Observer and Irving Avenue same on you for being taken in just because somebody said.
