1500 bucks for a min-pin? I gotta get into the puppy mill business.
Also how'd they find the guy?
Plus who buys a puppy and picks it up two weeks later?
A puppy's cuteness fades very quickly. Take advantage of all you can get before they grow old and ugly.

Probably a junkie who bought something else on a credit card or used one of those discount cards all stores now have.

Did you guys only read the first paragraph? The article states that the pet store was holding the dog until the purchasers came back from a vacation. Not an unusual situation.

why didn't they all go and rescue an equally cute dog at one of the many shelters here in chicago? not only would it cost a fraction of the $1500, but it would save a life. check out these dogs needing homes -- how can you not want to help them? www.petfinder.com

What a wonderful thing to teach your 5 year old child. NOT. To take something that is not yours.Shame on the store clerk as well.

While everyone is coming down on this guy - and rightfully so - what about the dumb-a.$.$. store clerk who "failed to ask for a receipt"?? That is inexcusable. No one could've stolen anything if she'd been doing the job she's paid to do!! Let's hope the store owner seriously reconsiders her employment there.

I'd also like to know how they found the guy. Obviously they didn't ask him for ID or even his name, or else they would have figured out it wasn't his dog. Maybe there was a surveillance video, but someone would have to recognize him.

Why is this a story? Hey Tribune I have another lead for you. This 8 year old kid in Oak Park just snuck 2 cookies out of the family cookie jar. Get on that story!!!!!

What an idiot! Now what could he possibly tell his son who not only lost "his puppy" but will find his father is a liar and thief. Hopefully, the boy will not be emotionally scarred from this event.

$1500 for a puppy mill dog? Now, that's a crime.

Please choose your next dog from a rescue organization or a reputable breeder.

I hope the man is punished to the full extent of the law.

Yvette, thanks for pointing that out. 99% of the time you get a dog from a pet shop it came from a puppy mill and is more likely to have health issues down the line. If you want a dog go to a reputable breeder, or better yet get a rescue dog. You can get any breed you want and they're already house broken and trained.

Get a dog from the Human Society or a rescue instead of paying these moron breeders thousands of dollars or any money to a ruthless puppy mill.

I would be interested to see how much time he gets for this, to see if the fact that the stole a puppy instead of a tv makes the punishment more harsh.

You know, I'm a huge dog lover. HUGE. But has anyone else noticed that the theft of an animal is becoming akin to murder in the press?
I suppose it's because newsrooms are dumbing down a lot, and these jounalists are relying more and more on "quick-emotion" news than professional journalism.

This is NOT true.

I'm all for animal shelter adoptions, but I have 2 purebreds from stores, and a mix from a shelter.

The shelter dog had a health issue, not the store dogs! Now all are healthy and happy...ages, 10, 6 and 3!
