I can't believe that in this economy the nurses are even considering going on strike. Be thankful you have a job, now shut up and do it.

Be thankful we have a job? We are. Shut up and do it? NO WAY- when people start becoming silent about things that matter- is when the world changed for the worse. Twin Cities nurses have BRAINS. we question and assess and as for all those IDIOTS who say it doesn't take much training- We train EVERY single day of our entire career.... we never stop learning. It's not "a job" people- I wouldn't be wiping someone's ass if it were just a job- flipping burgers sounds much more appealing when you put it as a job. It's about changing the face of healthcare- teaching, connecting and service.

Most of you R.N.'s dont wipe A.S.S. Thats what the nursing assistants do. They are the ones that deserve the raise. Quit trying to get people to feel sorry for you. If the nurses got paid for how much they piss and moan.... They all deserve big raises.

I don't think anyone wants to disparage the work nurses do. They do a good job. But the question is whether hospitals can continue to afford fairly rich pensions (at a time when other industries cannot). People are living longer and longer, and pensions that go on indefinitely simply cannot be sustained, it's too expensive.
Staffing is currently too rigid in hospitals, causing massive overpayment and inefficiencies. I agree that pulling nurses routinely into areas they don't normally work (like pediatrics over to adult oncology) is a bad idea. However, there has to be some flexibility, otherwise it becomes prohibitively expensive. CEO's make too much money, nobody will argue that. But even their money won't pay for all the money the nurses want. Nurses can graduate with a four year degree. It is not a profession that requires a lot of training to get into. To have a 40 hr work week paying 80,000 + benefits (which can be 20-30,000 dollars worth/yr) is too much.
I would prefer limited changes in staffing, and cutting the pension, for sure.
I agree, I believe that somewhere along the line, nurses obtained this entitlement syndrome. I believe they should have to muddle through this bad economy like everyone else has to. Personally, our family has experienced furlows, decreased hours, and receiving no pay increase on a yearly anniversary. And, having a pension is unheard of these days. Pensions have been replaced with 401k's where you put your own money in the pot and let it grow (being responsible). So no, I do not support this strike. All kinds of people are losing their homes because of employment being terminated. The sign of these times is, you are extremely blessed to have a job to go to, and are able to keep your home.
