I think there should be a time limit on how long they can be on welfare, get food stamps and get section 8

I couldnt agree more, my family struggles daily but we manage without government help. Seems as though they would want better, but too each there own I guess.

for some forms of government assistance there are time limits. Every situation is different, I wouldn't go judging those on assistance and assume they don't want better. Instead of getting on topix and complaining about how these people should have time limits for their assistance, maybe you should suggest different resources and options to them. If you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

For "welfare" its 60 months out of a lifetime. Meaning they cannot stay on it for more then 5 years. As for food stamps and such, why would u want to make someone starve? Some people depend in them. They work, but can't afford food after paying bills.

No, I don't want them to starve and the ones I was talking about were those that don't want better and are milking it for everything. Foodstamps are often abused. I only have concern for the children, mothers or fathers who are doing their best and those who are unable to work.

what I dont understand is if people work how do they qualify for food stamps? My husband and I are both full time students and both work jobs that only pay 9.00 an hour with two kids and we were told our income was too high to recieve food stamps. We live pay check to pay check and the only thing we splurge on is internet. We got to a low point where we were decided what bills to pay late so we could buy groeries but we've learned to coupon and shop sales. I dont have a problem with people getting assitance if they need it but it really does suck when you can only afford what your family needs and you have friends who don't work, get foodstamps, a medical card and a check every month get new laptops and go on vacations several times a year.

I completely agree and I've been there myself. About 14 years ago, I was single with 3 children working a minimum wage job and tried and was told no. The woman there told me I was too honest! You don't want to lie and if you did, you'd be the one to get caught. I know someone that has a boyfriend, they get section 8, food stamps and she gets child support from fathers of children that don't belong to the boyfriend. She doesn't keep the house clean, nor half of the time keep clean clothes or make them take baths. At least one of the fathers have to buy the child their clothes and everything else because she won't. Not that he shouldn't help with extras but she literally provides nothing for that child! They have internet, cable t.v. and a cell phone. I always thought the child support was to go toward helping provide for the child. Apparently in this case it's to provide luxuries that some of us that work don't! She's lived like this for years. You report it and they let them know they're coming and everything is acceptable when they get there.

Our entire welfare system needs an serious overhaul. It is simply human nature to slack off if your needs are met, and we have allowed welfare to become a way of life for people who could work. In my mind, if you get welfare, you should get your check only if you meet conditions: your kids attend school--an education guarantees that the next generation would need welfare; you do some type of community service that SAVES tax dollars for your neighbors (trash clean-up, mowing parks, etc); and you are in some type of job training yourself. Very, very few people need to be on welfare for more than a year and that would include those who are seriously disabled or old. For every person who "gets without working," many of us have to "work without getting."
