I recently went there looking for help with my rent, due to all the Social Security cut backs,it has become very hard for me to pay my rent and anything else for that matter.I went in and asked the lady at the desk about it and she said that we dont help anyone that dosent go to church here.I aske you is that a Christian act, I dont go to church at the moment, but i do believe in God and have been saved. I couldnt believe my ears.I had proof of what i get from Social Security and a letter from my landlord. But we never got that far,I was turned away without any questions.I understand there are over 10,000 that go to that church. I know im not the only one having problems now, money problems, alot of other people are to.I have never asked a church in my life for help.Just my experience with them, anybody else had this experience also?

nah that was uncalled for......churches should help, regardless if you are a member, but IF you WERE a member there you would need help with your rent they all seem pretty high and mighty so they think. I've dealt with them before and the HELPING THRU HIM program is a JOKE! I have donated there several years, and then when i came to MY time of need I too was turned away. Very sad and hypocrytical!

I concure and don't think it should matter if you are a member there or not and I know they have donated to "non-members" many times before.
In fact, I have had just the opposite experience. A friend of a member lost everything in a fire with little or no insurance and Southland stepped in and payed the bills for many months and they were not a member.
Generally the way it works is that you need an advocate from the church to help your cause. Is this perfect - probably not, but unfortunately in these times they are 1) considering probably hundreds of requests per month and 2) A considerable of these requests are people who don't really need it, but 'want it'. Having been on charitable boards before it is amazing how many people need 'charity' but drive around in a new SUV.
Am I suggesting that you are one of these people, certainly not, but any charitable organization has been burned many times in the past by these people and needs to be careful and unless they know all the circumstances and people involved it is hard to just give out the money when there are so many these days in time of need.
Do you have aquaintances that go to this church or other churches - I think this may be your best bet.
All the best...

Sorry your bubble got burst but you really have some lofty expectations.

Obviously, no church can help everybody. If they could, the government would drop all of their porgrams and let the churches handle it.

Churches do reach out but usually to people who have been identified by one of their members.

There seems to be some hypochracy here as well. You aren't a member at this particular church. You didn't support them when you were able but now you expect them to support you.

I actually go to church there and they would never say that. They give a person in the community that needs financial help every week. Say there's 10,000 people there on a Sunday, that's how much money they give that person. If u r having problems, I truely am sorry, but bashing a church? That's not going to get u anywhere! They help people all the time that do not go to church there that have a lot more financial issues than u. You should be thankful its just ur rent and realize it could always be worse.

I just wanted to say.... There is a commission that some churches send in to and then when ppl call asking for help that church will tell them to call the commission for help. It's the churches way of helping but not being involved with the actual help. I don't blame churches for that...otherwise they gotta put up with ppl complaining that the church wouldn't help. Just b/c it's a place of god does NOT mean they are "suppose" to help ppl. If they help everybody then how would they run the church??
Southland offers so much other help to our community, I don't blame them a bit for only helping their members with monetary issues. There is Community Action for monetary needs, is the way I look at it.

Just stating my opinion.....

If you would have worked harder initially you would have paid more money into you social security. Quit looking for handouts and go out and work for what you need rather than complaining about it. If you spent the time looking for another job and working towards finding others ways for income than getting on topix to complain about it. You may actually be shocked to find yourself able to pay these bills.

There will always be people that will try to put down a church or christains or even GOD. Telling people to go to hell is crazy. Dont try to turn people aganist a church because you say you were done wrong. Pick yourself up and go to try to find a job. As far as I know no one has had there social security cut back.

yes, I was curious about OP's statement about social security "cut backs". Since when has that happened? The only time I have heard of a cut in ss is when they have over-paid, which would not be a cut, but a reimbursement.

FYI: S.S.I. and some other benefits through the Social Security Offices, did NOT get a cost of living increase as usual. This is the first yr in about 40 years that a cost of living increase was not given to it's recipients. Also, when the stimulus was given out to people, people on those benefits from the Social Security Office only received $250.00 and everyone else in America received $300.00 and up depending on household size.

Just an FYI~~~~

Truth is that southland christian church used to help any all people that were in need of anything. rent, medicine, food, clothes, fur niture,couches...etc. They changed this poilcy to help only those affiliated with their church when a woman took advantage of their kindness by recieveing alot of furniture and things and selling them to make a profit of her own. That woman didnt even need the money. She owned her own home, and vaction home. So when all that went down Southland changed their policy. I dont know exactly if I agree with that desicion but i certaintly can understand them choosing to do so. Also, just so you know, they will help anyone in their congregation. They consider you a member after just a service or 2. You said you believe in god, go to church there a week or 2 in a row, They will then help you out should you ever need the assistance. and if not atleast there was no harm or foul done

perhaps the 'screeners' at SC decided that his person didn't need the help that was being requested. Whether or not their decision was Right or wrong, like others have stated, everyone can't be helped simply because they request it.

I agree with this. My only problem is, if you say you will help those in need, how picky and critical should you be of a recipient? Like I said b4, I can understand sc's point of view, i just dont know if i agree
