CT Soldiers Come Home For the Holidays
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ The first of two units of the Connecticut National Guard has returned home for the holidays, thanks to Gov. M. Jodi Rell's fundraising effort to bus them back to the state from bases in Wisconsin and Indiana.
National Guard spokesman Maj. Charles Jaworski says about 700 troops will be in Connecticut by Wednesday for a 10-day break from training for deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan early in the new year.
He says about 100 troops from the New London-based 250th Engineer Company returned to Niantic Tuesday evening.
Another 600 soldiers from the New Haven-based 102nd Infantry Regiment will arrive in Hartford on Wednesday morning.
Rell says ``Operation Home for the Holidays'' raised much more than its $200,000 goal to bus the soldiers home. She says extra money will be spent on additional support for state soldiers.
