if the state needs to cut the budget perhaps we should look at the public information directors like Mr. Garnett and spokesmen like William Seymour of the DMV . A $100,000 here a $100,000 there and soon we will be saving real money. We might even get to the truth quicker

Brian Garnett is lucky that he still has a job. He was under investigation for sexual harassment issues and for making racial comments to other workers. Lantz was brought in after Armstrong due to many sexual harassment issues in the department. She developed a "zero tolerance" policy for ALL employees in regards to sexual harassment. Somehow that doesn't apply to Garnett. In regards to this story, where there is smoke there is ALWAYS fire. Typical cover up from the Correctional Administration. He makes $110,000 a year and comments every now and then to the media. What else does he do? I'd love to hear it!

If I were the public information director instead of Brian Garnett, I'd also keep my mouth shut if I wanted to keep my cushy $110,473-a-year job. I'm sure that Commissioner Theresa Lantz told him exactly that!

Brian Garnett doesn't have to admit that having political connections are always beneficial even for inmates. Commissioner Lantz should just fire him and save the taxpayers his fat salary.

State Officials should have access to Connecticut's corrections facilities FOR OFFICIAL STATE BUSINESS, not to conduct personal visits under the GUISE of official business.

Ms. Stratton should be treated EXACTLY a other inmates, and our legislators who are misusing their power in this should be investigated and disciplined. Their actions further degrade the public trust in the Department of Corrections. The DOC's chief administration should also be disciplined and investigated for taking part in this sham.

...written by a Democrat, btw. I don't care what your party affiliation is if you don't play clean and open to the public.

Business as usual; we don't tell the citizenry how the laws only apply to the general public & not to the privileged elite. We don't even tell the public WHAT the laws are!

Oh,you don't think the commissioner told him exactly what to say? She & he should get the boot! I suppose the Courant will have to sue to get the facts.

Brian Garnett made a smart move leaving the awful world of TV News, where you make 50K if you are lucky and have to standout in the cold at 11PM reporting on a story that happened 10 hours ago. Plus you're done at age 40. With the State it's very little work, benefits to die for and the milk is always warm.

Mr. Garrett is like many upper Mgt. types who work for the State of Connecticut. Screw Up - Move Up. He keeps it up he'll be in line to become the next governor.

You can guarantee she got special rights and I can bet she skipped way ahead in the line for her classes. We should all understand the laws for us lowlifes not the Democrats

If you ask a cadet in the academy whether or not to let in a weapon into a correctional facility on their FIRST day they would know the answer. Garnett allowed it and the deputy warden took the fall. Great guy and a total BOOB.

What a joke! Can't wait until the courant gets a hold of those emails Lance wrote telling her staff to hook up this lady with more visits. Maybe they should ask the governor's office since they can actually provide this information the same week it is asked for! How can a 100k public information officer not provide information to the public when asked.

Garnett called some black employee simba and made other racist and sexist comments to DOC employees at their academy. It was reported in the courant about 6 months ago and all he got was a letter in his file.

He also allowed an ARMED state trooper inside Manson correctional which is not allowed for anyone. He over-rode a lower ranking employee (He is a director, which is the 3rd highest rank in the DOC) and let the trooper inside the prison with a gun. Just so the public understands, guns are not allowed in prisons because if 2 or 3 inmates overpower one person with a gun, it becomes a hostage situation. Correction guards, police, troopers etc. are not allowed to bring their guns into a jail, but Garnett threw that police out the window... And we pay him $110k a year to not give out information when he is the public information officer.

At least the Governor's office can provide information the same day it's asked, and probably pay that employee $70,000 less. Is anyone else outraged over this?

<quoted text>
It's true but no one cares. Why this guy has any authority in the chain of command is beyond me. He read from a teleprompter and now can over-ride correctional officials who have been doing their job for 20+ years. Something is wrong here.

From the DOC Website...

The External Affairs Unit of the Connecticut Department of Correction is comprised of the Office of Public Information, the Department's Legislative Liaison, the Office of Standards and Policy, the Department's Legal Affairs Office, the agency's Audio/Visual Production Unit and oversees compliance with the state's Freedom of Information statutes.

The Unit, which reports directly to the Commissioner, is responsible for fostering and maintaining the Department's liaison and communication functions throughout state government, and among the agency's staff, as well as with the general public.

The Unit seeks to support the Department by ensuring that accurate and complete information about the functioning of the agency, within the parameters of safety and security, is available in a timely and beneficial fashion.

... I could see him leading the A/V team, but not the other duties. That unit has to make over 1 Million a year with benefits included and cannot even give accurate information to the public when asked.
