Because Mitchel raised the rent so high during these hard times and the owners couldnt pay it If you drive thru town you will notice a lot of his property is empty and falling down. I dont know how he gets away with it. Must own the zoning board and building inspector.

but was there anything wrong with the market itself. was it over priced or dirty. what does the town need if someoneelse opened it back up.

The Mitchells had nothing to do with the closing of the failed market. The market was over-priced and did not support itself. It is not the responsibility of the landlord to ensure that his tenant is able to run a sustainable business. It certainly did not help that Stop & Shop is less than 2 miles down the road. It is very difficult to compete with big business.
It is ignorance and envy that drive this misconception and attack on the Mitchells. If you drive through any town right now, you will find empty buildings...from Madison to Mystic. It just so happens that they own many properties in Niantic so this assumption is automatically made. They are the convenient go-to family in town everything is their fault, right.
It is the economy that is the driving force behind many businesses moving or closing. Many small businesses were hanging on by a thread and when the economy went haywire, many were unable to keep hanging on. It is simple economics - not the Mitchells who are responsible.
