Has anybody ever heard that a plane crashed into the mountain that borders Perry County in the late 70's or early 80's? The area would be approx. where Dogwood Acres Campground in Newville is. If you look up at the mtn, there is a bald spot in the trees. Someone told me that a plane crashed there but I can't find ANY articles or proof.???

There were several small planes that crashed on that knob over the years. I can't remember the one you are talking about. I will have to take a look on my next trip by there. On the tip of the "elephant" at Doubling Gap, there was an electronic beacon there for years to guide planes. It was visible from Newville when we were kids. The flight path for planes still exists over that knob but modern technology has replaced the beacon years ago. I still miss the beacon. There is still some wreckage of a plane near the old beacon but it is on the north side of the ridge. Maybe someone else has a better memory than I?

I think what you saw was a large rock outcropping called Flat Rock. This spot is an area near the top of the mountain facing the valley. It is very scenic on a clear day. The spot is accessible from Col. Denning Park via a trail that is about 2 miles long. The trail goes by one of Lewis The Robbers caves. Wear a study pair of shoes or boots.
