As soon as those who claimed to support "universal background checks" realize that what they are talking about is "universal gun registration" they'll lose any support for new legislation.

The only way to enforce universal background checks would be to make everyone register their firearms then require all transfers to go through an FFL. This would require registration taxes and the dealer would want a fee for each and every transfer.
