I was at CDB from 77-82 which included a year as an assistant counselor in Cabin 11. I was from a NJ suburb but made good friends with other kids from NYC and other areas. I remember 2 kids from Puerto Rico who tried to teach us spanish. I have very fond memories of those summers.
Anyone remember the cabin inspections and getting their bed flipped if their space was messy or getting put in the trough sinks filled with cold water if you didn't get up in the morning? To an outsider, that might seem like a bad memory, but they were team building type experiences.
Other random memories:
- Canteen time
- Scary stories at bedtime
- Box Ball playoffs
- The slimy back lake vs. the front lake
- Picnics with the girls camp while the nuns watched us like hawks
- Riflery Fun Day - getting to shoot models and other things
- Working as a stable boy for the horses & then getting to ride the open trails as a reward
- Learning lanyard with Brother Peter
- Brother "Healthy" from the infirmary

I went to Don Bosco in the mid 80's. I remember inspections with Brother Rich who was a little scary. I had my bed flipped more than once. I remember Brothers Steve, Ferdie, Gene, Bill and a Deacon Al who drove a very nice car. There were things that I did for the first time and last time. There were activities like archery, horseback riding and I remember building model planes. All of which I never did again. I have a polaroid picture from cabin 8 with a Brother Jerry. It was in Newton New Jersey and without a doubt one of the best experiences of my childhood. Another thing I remember doing every morning was going to mass which I enjoyed. I still can remember a few of the songs. I remember a guy named Mike Acham who could hit a softball a mile. I remember being there when Dave Righetti pitched his no-hitter on the 4th. of July and my father coming up to tell me. I remember the pool was unbelievable as well . I remember being woken up to an announcement, "Good morning campers, it's time for another great day at Camp Don Bosco." Good times.

Steve Weber? If thats you, hope all is good. I went around 82-85...just remember playing a ton of baseball, basketball and hockey. Ferdie gave my a ride to my grandparents when I had a LL game. But I thought he was leaving the brotherhood because he was into women. And I remember Brother Paul was in charge of hockey. Thats all I've got...if anyone has pics or thought, add it.

I went there in the mid 80's. Best childhood memories there. Loved the mud hikes we use to do and farmer O'leary stories scared the hell out of me lol. I remember when I got dropped off there I was crying looking at the highway to go back home to my Mom in Brooklyn NYC, but after a week I didn't want to leave. The brothers there really changed me around from being a knucklehead Brooklyn kid and being more close to God. Ill never forget the Christ statue there in the chapel, really spooked me cause it felt almost like it was alive and was really looking at you lol. I think if I remember clearly I was told that was the only thing left standing in a church that was bombed and demolished in world war 2 or 1. I fractured my ankle there in a race (stepped in a deep hole) and they kept me in the infirmary for a week the only thing that sucked that year but I will always remember that place got me out of the concrete jungle for a full summer and to a place I will never forget.
Mcfly (my nickname there, I was really skinny when I was a kid lol)

I was just thinking of Camp Don Bosco today, as I have from time to time over the years. If my memory serves me correctly, I lived in Cranford, NJ during the times that I went there during the summer months. My brother and I would go there a couple of weeks each summer. I have very fond memories of my time there. If this is the same Camp Don Bosco and I'm saying "if", because I haven't seen anything posted that mentions.... horses..... My fondest memories are my being assigned a horse each summer, during my stay, to take care of. I'm now sixty-eight, so my brother and I probably were there sometime between 1955 to 1959. I'm really guessing, as to the years that we were there. I also remember going trapping for Gophers/Ground Hogs and learning how to skin them. Not that I have ever done so, beyond my camping experiences.

I was a camper at CDB from 1950-55. Best year of my childhood. Great memories lots of fun and good teachings. Looking for some campers, Brothers or Priest from that era just to say hello and rekindle old memories. God bless all.

Hi William,
I enjoyed reading your post. This is the Camp Don Bosco that was in Newton NJ. It sounds like it is one and the same. I might also suggest that you look-up "Camp Don Bosco" on Facebook for more stories, memories and pictures.
Remember, St. Don Bosco's birthday is coming up August 16,(1885).

Sincerely,
Walt Famular
