No criminal action will be taken in the February death of a Broughton Hospital patient who died of asphyxia after a staff member sat on his torso. The death of 27-year-old Anthony Lowery, a patient at the mental health hospital in Morganton, was one of the incidents that led the federal government to stop Medicaid and Medicare payments in August.

On Monday, the district attorney's office that serves Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties said in a letter to the State Bureau of Investigation that it will not charge the staff member who restrained Lowery in the death. Read more

Debbie is what is known as a troll on these boards. Basically she is seeking attention, any type she can get. She is just like a child and will do whatever it takes to get attention. If no one replies to her bogus posts, she will get tired of not getting the attention she is seeking and move on.

If that is true, why did you reply? Are you the attention seeker? Are you like a child? Are you one of the staff up in Broughton hosp?

I replied because alot of new posters on here do not know what a troll is and will keep feeding it and it will keep coming back.once they understand what your problem is, they will no longer feed the troll and your drama will move right on down on this forum and vanish.
by the way, I see you finally figured out how to use spell check.

I have been on about all the wards at broughton and have noticed that they have wire mesh screens or bars on all the windows. Our ladies group at church visits broughton monthly to bring snacks and fruit to the patients there.Debbies story was made up by a mental patient. Not sure it her brother really did tell her that crap or if as others believe, debbie herself made it up for attention. Either way, there is no way this is a true story. I have seen the bars and the mesh on all the windows on the wards we have been on and since we have been doing this for the past 16 yrs, we have been on all the wards except one and that is the youth ward.

I agree with alot of the other posters. Debbie either is a troll or a mental pt herself. Please, no one reply to this nut and she will seek attention from some other source. If she dont receive the attention, she will be gone in a week or so and we wont have to see her mental illness drama anymore.Go away Debbie!

After a brand new and frightening diagnosis of Bi Polar and assorted other "issues" my County MH counselor basically convinced me that for my own good, I should follow his very strong suggestion to admit myself to Brought on. I had no insurance coverage and was very despondent. I did what he said.

Over the course of that weekend, I witnessed some of the most horrific and systematic abuse of one could ever imagine. Don't know what the current laws are but once you are admitted and express certain :thoughts: you cannot just get up and walk out. Repeatedly, I tried that weekend. Each time I was told I had to wait until Monday when the full staff would return. Buddy Hall was the administrator at that time.

After on particularly brutal beating, kicking and dragging of a severely schizophrenic man in the cafeteria one morning,(his name was Buck) I snapped and stood up in front of about 35 40 other patients and told the two guys dog it to stop. Other staff witness it to but it was just business as usual for them. It was a sadistic weekend.

Finally I got in front of a review team with a psychiatric, an Nurse Practitioner etc and told my story. Guess what? They did not care. They told me to talk to an on site Patient Advocate. Oh some of the aides had written very damning and derogatory things about ME in my file in an attempt to discredit me. I was taken to the Patient Adovcates office and I broke down while reciting the incidents I had seen. One in particular was a severely intellectually disabled man who I found later, was only there until a bed opened up at another facility. The previous nights two "aides" took turn kicking beating and throwing this man across the room. They laughed and called it "telling him a bed time story'. A young Nurse was on duty and ignored the entire thing.

I was taken to the Director of Nursing office where I told my story. I cannot say if I was believed but their "solution" was to transfer me to another wing in the hospital "for my protection and so I could finish the therapeutic process" yeah right. I got the F*$#K outta there as soon as I could.

Long story short. The Charlotte Observer and several Local TV and other media ran with the story after I called them. It actually made front page news ,much to my surprise. I was visited by two SBI agents who verified my story, charged certain individuals and I testified in open court. Not an easy thing to do for me.

That weekend was easily the most traumatic I've ever had. After I returned to my home and family, I don't think I ventured outside for at least two to three weeks. Anyone who doubts me can look up the story written by Carol Leonig who now works for the Washington Post. She and I worked hard together on the story and subsequent stories though I will not say I know her well.

As I said I testified once. I could not make myself do it a second time do I have no idea what the final out come was. The main offender was a guy named Kenny Wilson I believe. I hope he fu^*&ng rots in hell! If it isnt a crime for other staff to watch things like this and remain silent, it should be. They ALL seemed to pull together during the investigation. Abuses like these could NOT happen without the silence of other staff members Shame on them,....

I am still in the mental health system voluntarily. ALL my providers know full well: If it is a choice between Broughton or jail. lock my ass up in the nearest cell. I would rather die that go back to that snake pit.

Call me names, call me a lair. I still have the scars of that nightmare of a place. I can back up every word or anyone else could who isn't too lazy to do some research..........

Just remember a witness to horror is also a victiom of horror..........

Maybe so John, but it still doesn't change the verfiable facts of what happened. You think in some way trying to label me as mentally ill is what? Embrassing? Intimidating?
Heck, if I was conerned about what people would think of me, I would never have allowed my name to be all over the front page of the Charlotte Observer...

Just stating the facts. And the facts are pretty plain, coming from someone who has mental issues.

I beive you,all the way ,Thats what I have been trying to tell people, all alone, and most of the freaks that reply to me are the staff that work at this, alwful place called Broughton hosp,so sad that the pts there has to still go threw all that crap, but one day they will be found out,and the staff that does these things and the ones who ignore them are just as bad. They will pay dearly for what they are doing! YOU CAN NOT TREAT PEOPLE LIKE THAT AND GET AWAY WITH IT. I do not understand why this place is not being investigated by someone who can do something, about changing this place, where people can get help not abused.Com e on people get off that stuff, just because a person is mentally ill does not mean they cant think ,get real!

John; This may come as a shock to you but Broughton is a psychiatric hospital you know? people like me, as you say "with mental issues" sometimes find it necessary to go to places like Broughton.

We have every right to expect humane, safe and dignified treatment just as if we were admitted to a medical hospital. Like I said before John, if there were any stigma attached to me that I accepted? I would never have done what I did. I am glad I did and would do it again in a heart beat.

I am the only person on this planet who gets to define me. John you are extremely boring and unoriginal. I am disappointed.

Debbie: Thanks. I was also in Broughton in 1972. Spent an entire summer there at age 18. Are you aware of the grave yard at Broughton? Former patients who died while being "treated" are buried there. Some of the head stones have names on them, some do not. In '72 a psychiatrist there stabbed his nurse to death. There was also a bomb threat which resulted in soldiers choppering in from Ft Bragg. We heard it was a former employee who had been terminated for sexually molesting patients.

Not much seems to have changed....I cannot make this stuff up.

Debbie, if this is true, it is deplorable. Broughton has the worst reputation of just about any state facility anywhere...and has for many, many years. If as you say, these are employees, they need to take their $9.00 an hour ass somewhere else where they don't have contact with others.
