No, you ate at the "Hickory Cafe and Arcade."
The old "Arcade Pool Room",(as everyone knew it as),
from way back when, when hotdogs were a dime, closed.
Just because other people chose to give it a similar
name doesn't mean it's the SAME business.
That's like saying Joel's Kitchen in viewmont didn't close
because Jessie's Diner replaced them, and now Granny's
replaced them.
Joel's and Jessies are both out of business in the location
Granny's is in now.
Not arguing, just enlightening.

Add Panda Express on Highway 70 to the list. Went by there earlier this week, and all of the signs have been taken down.
Why Ragazzis left town is beyond comprehension.
Every time we went it had what seemed to be a good
crowd.
And to replace it with Panda Express?
My wife and I ate at PE twice when it first opened.
We didn't like it at all.
Ragazzis was one of our favorite places to eat.
Their dish called, North and South was so good that
there are times when I think about it, I'd pay triple
what it cost to get to have it again.
Does anyone remember the good food they had there,
or any specific dishes you liked?

Thanks to everyone who added to this list.
It brought back a lot of good memories, and a
few gross ones, too.

When 'been there and back' mentioned the old
Arcade Pool Room , I thought about the last time we
ate there.
My wife and I sat at the counter and ordered our
food.
While we were waiting, the cook came up to
the plastic tip jar near where we were sitting.
He poured the money out on the counter and proceeded to count it with his 'sanitary gloves' on. Then he went back to the grille, not changing
his gloves, and put out some burgers on the grille.

Once when we ordered two bbq trays to go,
when we got home and removed the aluminum foil from
one of them, a huge, dead black roach was on top
of the bbQ.
Yuck !

One more:
When we walked by the big cookie store,(I don't remember the name, but you know the one),
a very obese young woman with a terrible
cold, was putting out cookies with her bare hands, no sanitary gloves.
She stopped...and a huge, wet, snotty, sneeze came out of her. Of course she covered it with her
cooking-putting-out hand.
She had one of the worst colds I've ever seen.
Wait....here comes another one. AAACHOOOOOO !!!
SAME, OPEN , INTO THE PALM, HAND.
Then what happened you may ask?
Did she stop and wash her hands.?
No...'fraid not.
She went right back to putting out cookies
WITH THE SAME HAND.
I thought we'd heave before we got away from
that memory and I wish we could erase from our minds.
As they say...if you eat out..you never know
WHAT you may be eating.
Thanks again to those that contributed to this
Topix. I enjoyed reading your postings.
Bon appetite.

I called the service station next door to
Section House Café when I didn't get an answer,
after calling a couple of times.
The woman that answered said they had been closed over a week.
So much for eating there.
My wife and I ate there about once every other
week and noticed it was going down hill pretty fast.
We both said it would be gone before the end of
the year, but didn't think it would be gone this
soon.
No more Section House Café.
Another one added to the list.

FYI:
The New City BBQ opened another restaurant where
TCBY once was, at the Exxon station, across from
the new Dunkin Donuts on hwy 127N.
We drove to the one in Granite Falls about every 10 days to eat and it's a lot nicer not to have to
drive that far.
We've eaten there twice since they opened.
The people are friendly , the place is very clean,
and the food it good.

Judge's Express on Highway 70 in Hickory is empty! The tall neon sign at the entrance has been removed as has the letters on the front of the building. I don't know oboist the express in Valdese. The website for the large Judge's in Morganton still says they have a restaurant in Hickory so it's not been updated. Anyone know about this?

Pleaser's in Viewmont is reopening.
Bethlehem Restaurant is closed and for sale.
There is a fairly new restaurant that has moved into
where Section House Cafe' was.
I haven't been by there, so it may be out of business buy now
the way restaurants are closing.

Fatbacks lasted a short time like the one before it.
After Pleasers, it seems to be jinxed location.
Dairy Queen on Highway 127 quit a few weeks ago.
Bethlehem Restaurant is for sale and will go out shortly.
Restaurants are the worst business to try to make go
of it. People go into it with a dream and no experience
and don't have a clue about what they're getting into.

You're about as dumb as Calhoun on Amos and Andy.
Look smartass.....when anyone says "the Arcade Pool room, or just pool room, they
don't mean the dump that's there now.
When it was known as the "Pool Room", it was busy about all of the
time. A lot of times it was difficult to even get in the place.
Some of the patrons played POOL, or BILLARDS, thus, The
Pool Room.
You don't see any billiard playing NOW, do you?
The greasy spoon that's there now has nothing to do with what others are talking
about other than they happened to open up in the same building.
If the food at the old Pool Room was rated 100, the one that's there now
may get a 25.
Get off your haughty high horse you Know It All, moron.

I just came by Santorini Grille, 2/7/14 and their is a lease
sign inside the window at the entry door.
Bad reviews of poor service and food closed the doors, I think.

Went there a couple times when they first opened and enjoyed it. Bottom line our family like most others in the disappearing middle class have had to all but cut out eating out due to the Obama economy. Its a fact the rich are richer and the middle class and poor are poorer under Obama. The banksters and big oil enjoy record profits while the rest of the country enjoys more food stamps. Gas has doubled and that causes food inflation. Most of the above mentioned eateries are victims of the Obama economy

You are 100% correct.
What most people don't realize is that Obama's mission is to destroy
our country and he's doing a great job of it.
America will be a third world country within a few years.

Fatbacks had a great location. The reason they are not there is the overhead. People around here wants everything for nothing. Having a restaurant means to have good and good service and also have a food cost of 30% or less to make money. Everyone around here wants to be able to go out to eat for what they can make the food at home....NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. There is no money around here so that's why restaurants cant make it in Hickory.

That's not true at all, have you ever tried to get into a steakhouse or sports bar on weekends ?
If you serve good food and have good people serving and cooking the food customers will come.
But if you have crappy people cooking and serving crappy food and overcharging then customers will leave.
