Ongoing Battle Over Exit 131: Letter seeks help reopening exit on I-40

There are 2 comments on the story from Oct 10, 2007, titled Ongoing Battle Over Exit 131: Letter seeks help reopening exit on I-40. In it, reports that:

“As long as the ramps are there, we still hold hope we may be able to have them opened. We also understand that ... at some time it becomes a futile effort, but we haven't given up hope yet.”

More than two months after the N.C. Department of Transportation closed Exit 131 on Interstate 40, leaders representing six local governments and a law enforcement agency have lent their support to a letter asking for help in reopening it.

Addressed 'to whom it may concern,' the letter was requested by residents who wanted to easily show and prove widespread support for reopening the exit's western ramps if they encountered or contacted someone who can effect change, Conover City Manager Donald Duncan said. Read more

Exit 131 should be re-opened. It does not cause a traffice problem and is a real service to those residents and business that live in the Conover area. The orginal decesion to close Exit 131 was made many years ago when it was announced that Exit 132 would be built. However the area on Hwy 16 North of I-40 has changed greatly and now has many business that would benefit by this exit being re-opened. It would also help to distribute traffice going to the new shopping centers being built in this area. We not only need Exit 131 re-opened but could use a way to get from the Rock Barn Road Exit into the area where all these new business are being built accross form the new super Wal-Mart Center. Hope fully common sense is not dead and fair play still exist. If so we should see Exit 131 re-open soon.

It's becoming more and more questionable whether common sense does exist. The people of Conover need this Exit to stay open. Mr. Lyndo Tippet (NC Sec of Transportation) and Mr. John Sullivan (Federal Highway Administration, NC rep) seem to have put their heads together to GET THE EXIT REMOVED. Why are these 2 men dead set against helping the people they both represent? ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Do the right thing. RE-OPEN EXIT 131, CONOVER, NC.
