I think that the campaign that Everett Jones has ran is a disgrace. It has been very nasty and below the belt! Some of the information he and his cronies have put in the paper haven't been correct. The emails that were sent in the Northern part of the county, along with the childish commercial that is running says alot about him to me. I personally do not want anyone with these tactics protecting my son, family, friends, or me. My question is...If he thinks the type of campaign he is running isn't dirty...How will he run the Sheriff Department? Dirty as well?

I totally agree with the woman!!!! How distasteful can one individual be? I have heard that he had a hard time keeping his personal life straight, how will he ever be able to look after a whole county? I would also really like to know why someone that had been with the sheriff's department as long as him would get fired? That is a huge concern to me!!! Someone just doesn't up and leave!! I don't know this Jimmy Thornton guy, but I know that he hasn't ran a negative campaign. That alone says alot about him in my opinion!!! Everett Jones seems to be a man of no morals. He also states that he thinks God and Family comes first, and that he lived by the "Golden Rule" the type of campaign that he has ran proves otherwise! It also proves that he is a lier!!!

I think you guys need to get to know Everett Jones before you post such negative comments. It’s for sure you don’t know Jimmy Thornton well.

What about the fact that Jimmy Thornton cursed out a little old lady who was only trying to find out about her house broken into?

How about the fact that he told a citizen who had a complaint about an SRO last week to call him back after the election?

How about his "wonderful" drug enforcement team with only 2 officers actually working in it and one of those recently had his wife arrested for guess what? Drugs.... and not the first time, either.

Jimmy finally ran for office enough times that he won after the fourth race for various offices. How well is he really looking after you? He has run the SBI Agents out of the Sheriff's office and Clinton PD has made space for them! He is not running that department, his chief deputy is and let's face it, there are enough skeletons in his closet for a Halloween horror house. Great job on drug money? If Jimmy Thornton had involved the right agencies 90% of that money would have come back to the sheriff's department. As it stands they forfeit the money to the state for education.

Jimmy's experience as a "certified law enforcement officer" exactly none. He worked probation not LAW ENFORCEMENT!!!! He has never worked as a law enforcement officer, and his 29 years as a probation officer doesn't count! Both professions are worthy professions, but a profiency in one does not lend itself to a proficency in the other. They are two different worlds. Maybe Jimmy needs to go back to hog farming and Everett Jones can actually put some ethics back into the Sampson County Sheriff's Department.

So at least meet the person you are talking trash about before you go so far as to publish your comments!

I think you are a disgrace to people with a brain. Anyone can click on the phone link and get all of the email addresses you are referring to.

Has run is the correct term, not has ran. Childish commercials? Check the facts. Jimmy Thornton is spending our money like it is water. New Ford Expeditions? Did anybody tell him they run on gas?

Well, hello April Cannady and concerned citizen – one in the same! Everett’s campaign is FACT!!! There was nothing below the belt about it – in fact, Jimmy Thornton has nothing below the belt! Jimmy’s campaign - the first time he ran for Sheriff, he LIED to us – saying that David King, his opponent had shot and killed two black men. He shot one in self-defense and that man is walking around today!
Jimmy’s entire career at the Sheriff’s Office was built on a lie. Let’s not forget that Jimmy ran for Clerk of Court twice before he was denied the chance to run again. So, he runs for Sheriff, spreads lies, gets lucky and wins. Well, I think his luck is about to run out.
If you do not want “anyone with these tactics” protecting your son, family, friends or you, then you are certainly free to move to another county – Roseboro borders Cumberland and Bladen Counties. As for how Everett will run the department, with ETHICS, which the current Sheriff – your cousin, as well as his Chief Deputy, John Conerly do not have!!!!!!! As far as distasteful, have you looked in the mirror lately? It is distasteful to even bring up someone’s personal life – which apparently you have no clue about. Your personal life isn’t so snow white either – with a DARK cloud hanging over it! How’s your girlfriend?
As for getting fired, that also was based on a lie just to get rid of Everett – from Jimmy! Everett was not the only one to get fired based on a lie either since Jimmy took office. You are right about Jimmy not running a negative campaign. He has nothing negative on Everett. You have a right to your opinion – they are like other body parts – everyone has at least one!!! A man of no morals – you must have meant Jimmy, because anyone who knows Everett knows that he is a man of morals and values! He is a man who lives by the “Golden Rule” and is not the liar in this campaign. You will not see any reports about Everett accepting illegal campaign contributions, as Jimmy did. One would think that since this is his fourth time running for a public office, he would know better by now. What about that officer involved shooting that Jimmy lied to the media about? The Sheriff’s Office lied and is trying to cover it up. That was right there near your house. Jimmy Thornton is supposed to be a deacon in his church. This is the same man who would curse at citizens over the telephone as well as his employees. That says a lot to me about the kind of person Jimmy is. He is nothing but a short, sneaky hypocrite. Jimmy Thornton is not worthy of wearing the Sheriff’s badge!!!!!!!! And as for his Chief Deputy, everyone knows that is as crooked as they come. And learn to spell!

The Sheriff's office did lie about the chase incident. They covered it up and told everyone that the car was not hit. Why doesn't someone just go look at the car, or ask the person who got arrested? He may be a criminal BUT his car was hit by a bullet fired from a Sheriff's Department weapon. Sure the Deputy did not follow policy when he fired shots at a moving car, but the Sheriff's Office SHOULD HAVE BEEN RESPONSIBLE enough to just tell the TRUTH about the incident. Watch and see what happens if Thornton wins the election. That Deputy will get fired.

I think that anyone from the public can sit back and say what they think the Sheriff should do and play Monday morning QB. Let’s get some facts out in the open. Yea the Sheriff bought some SUV's for the Department. First of all the Department purchased three SUV's not four like Everett stated. What he failed to report also is that the SUV's were bought on state contract and cost less than the CrownVics. Do they burn more gas well sure they do (about 1 or 2 miles less per gallon more than the CrownVic)Whoopee.... As far as the money seized going back to the Department and not the School, well that’s horse crap. First of all who cares who gets the money as long as the illegal money and drugs are taken off the street. I've even heard some fuss that the Sheriff was responsible for taxes being raised. That again is horse crap. No one has commented about the County building new schools like no tomorrow and EMS going paramedic. But I guess those things don’t cost the tax payers a dime and the Sheriffs Departments needs are far less important than EMS or the schools. I mean they just protect us from CRIMINALS that’s all. Lets get a grip people Everett may be a great guy and I’m not talking bad about him, but I think we as tax payers need to realize that the Sheriffs Department is a lot better off now than it was four years ago. We have more deputies and more importantly better trained deputies protecting us than we ever have before. As far as the Deputy shooting at the vehicle and you assuming he may get fired, I think that’s between the deputy and the Sheriffs Department. The complaint on the SRO I think that’s between the School and the Sheriffs Department. Putting personnel issues out in the public is bad business and unprofessional. So again lets be thankful that we have a Sheriff that wants to put more deputies on the street and has taken an aggressive approach to drug enforcement in our County, four years ago we didn’t know what drug enforcement was. The only thing citizens did know before Jimmy was the Sheriff’s Department had a crooked drug unit and not enough deputies to respond to calls for service.

We can all sit back and play Monday morning QB. I didn't get my information from Everett,so MY BAD on the number of SUV's. We all buy on state contract. Putting personnel issues out in public is bad policy. BUT, I am not connected to either candidate and a member of the public and I found out.

That drug money seized could be a big benefit to a rural department like Sampson County, so that's not horse crap. Agreed the drugs and money are off the street and that's good. The Johnston County Sheriff seized enough drug money correctly, to pay an Assistant District Attorney's Salary for a year. That ADA only works drug cases thanks to the drug dealers and the Johnston County Sheriff's Department! The Law Enforcement Officer's Association building was completely remodeled with confiscated drug money and in addition to that, the firing range in Johnston County was also remodeled with confiscated drug money that came back to the Sheriff's Department. All in one year! So I have to say we as citizens should care where that money goes. It IS really important to get that money back into our county. Look at the money that could go into Equipment and Training that we won't have to pay for and officers won't have to do without.
Jimmy is a relatively new Sheriff, and he'll learn, so let's cut him a little slack on that. It takes time to get things right anytime you go into a new job. Anyway the election is over and needs to be put to rest. There are no saints in politics. If people are not happy with the service they get, they will talk about it. That's just the way the world works. No law enforcement official can please everyone.

What did I tell you? FOUR Deputies were told that their services were no longer needed. One was the one who shot at the car - SHOCKER! The other three who knows? Yep, the truth shall set someone free - when it all comes out. It may even get them a little free time in a state facility!

the firing of four deputies was ridiculous. there was no need for this at all. i only see two that needs the axe and that is Jimmy Thornton, and Chief Connley. Sherriff Thornton has completely lost his mind. those deputies were good deputies and a great lost to the sheriff department. I HAVE AN IDEA. lets take the so called heat team -aka- SHIT. "SHERIFF HIGHWAY INTERDECTION TEAM" and lets put this team to better serve the county in checking water meters or pumpng out septic tanks. it's really sad when deputies loose their jobs causing them to have trouble supporting their families or providing food for the table. it seems to me that all the sheriff's department is concerned about is their " SHIT " team. this team has never did nothing for me but the patrol deputies that were fired have done alot for the citizens of sampson county.

I don't understand why the sheriff would let deputies go after the election?[The Daily Record |Dunn, N.C. on Nov. 10, 2006 stated: Despite a tough campaign, Sheriff Thornton said yesturday."No employees have been fired or demoted there"]Are you telling me that he has let 4 deputies go? I don't think that is right. Why would he tell the daily record no employees have been fired or demoted and then let 4 deputies go.

What happen with jimmy thornton was not fair. The deputies were let go without reason and NO notice of anykind. I do not know the reasons why because when asked, he would not say. I can say this, it was a coward's way of doing it because he did not fire them himself, instead he got his chief duputy to do it, and we all know it was most enjoyed by both. I do not see the advantage of him doing this and truly, it will hurt the county in the future. To make matters worst, he is hiring alot of people out of the county and this is not good for Sampson County. He is taking away job offers for the citizens here and hiring people that can not support him. Not a smart man.

You have no ideal what you are talking about. Spending time in a state facility, for what? IF it was that bad, the "SHERIFF" would have fired them right on the spot. Instead, he waits until after re-election to fire them. You need to get your facts straight before you go state things you have no clue about. If he was doing his job, he would not have waited. Brownie points for the "SHERIFF". Anytime the public is in danger, why would the sheriff wait?

You mistake my comment. I wasn't refering to any deputy with that comment. Only to the past and some things done illegally and at cost to us as citizens. The fired deputies were all great workers. I feel bad for them and the county has had a great loss with the refusal keep these deputies in service for Sampson County. Oh by the way CLINTON CITY MAYOR: Get out of the Chief's way and Jimmy's pocket and let Clinton City hire some of these GOOD LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS that the sheriff's office chose to let go. Don't worry they will find jobs and Clinton will lose good officers because "politics" comes before the very real need for our officers TO PROTECT AND SERVE.
