Why does the teachers at the city school get to abuse the not so smart children..Our average and below average children are being abuse by Mrs.Layman and a lot more teachers with goodies for the A students while the B,C,D, and Fs watch them enjoy. Is this fair to the students????Think not, from what parents are saying.Try this at home with your family and stop messing with our kids,we have enough problems without choosing to make them cry because of some dumb teachers given the smart kids all the praise.

I believe that the teachers at Newport Grammar School only want what is best for the students. I also think that rewarding the students who make good grades is an encouragement for all. My child makes average grades and is still rewarded. This ultimately comes down to the student studying and taking an interest in how their work is given to the teachers. Also falls upon the parents to work with the their children to ensure that they are learning and don't need some type of extra help. Instead of coming down on the teachers, why not get the extra help for the child. I understand that not all children learn as fast as others. I bet a lot of teachers would be eager to help, if they see a child that is struggling instead of just pure laziness on either the child or parent.

Its to give the kids motivation to do better.. it happens in the real world every day "if you work" do a better job get a bonus or a raise.. Unplug the playstation turn off the xbox.. and help your kid with his or her homework.. and if you cant find someone who can theres lots of tutors or programs...

You do not know what you are talking about. Why dont you try going to the school and discussing "what you beleive" to be a problem with the teacher/administration instead of getting on here and airing your dirty laundry and poor writing skills to all of Newport!

Then pull your little darling out if you are unhappy. There are 9 other schools close by. Topix is not a place to start a parent teacher conference. So learn some etiquette and hope your kids learns some manners at NGS. Cosby rocks!

All schools in Cocke County, regardless in the city or county have the potential to be a great school. One thing that is wrong with the outlook of some people is that they judge the school system based on location. I'm sure that just as many children that go to the city school that attend one that is a county school go to college and can get a degree. A child will learn by how much effort that is put forth by parents and that child. Any child can learn. It is up to the parents to discipline that child to understand that education is important regardless of where they get it.

NGS has some of the best teacher's in our county! As for your issue concerning "abuse" by Mrs. Layman is totally absurd. My son was in Mrs. Layman's class last year and I found her to be one of the most prepared, talented and caring teacher's that I have encountered at NGS. By no means has she ever "abused" any children! She cares deeply for her students and rewards students in the manner in which they should be rewarded. If you perform well, then you will be rewarded. As for the students who did not receive a reward, and are watching the other students who were rewarded, perhaps this is a lesson for them so that they can be encouraged to do better next time, so that they may be rewarded.

THINK ABOUT THIS:
"The efforts you make will surely be rewarded. If not, then you are simply not ready to call them efforts.

Another thing, you have stated in a later post that you do not have any children, so I am a bit confused as to why you even started this topic?

Newport Grammar School Discipline Policy

Assertive Discipline

Newport Grammar School uses the assertive discipline philosophy. "Teachers have the right to establish a classroom structure and routine that provides the optimal learning environment. Teachers have a right to determine and request appropriate behavior from the students that meets teacher needs and encourages the students' positive social and educational development. Teachers have a right to teach and students have a right to learn without interference from student disruptions."

Consequences ranging from classroom warning, lunch detentions, in-school and out-of school suspensions, alternative placements, corporal punishment, and/or expulsion are used if needed. Individual teachers determine rewards to encourage good behavior.

** In general, students should (1) follow directions,(2) respect the right, privacy, and property of other,(3) use appropriate language, and (4) stay on task and complete assignments.**

NGS is a bunch of crap. The bullying is ridculous. They frown upon poor children and play politics all the time. Mrs. Burchette's idea of addressing the bullies is to tell them who told on them so they are more careful to hide there activities.

Ms. Pam Lewis is a rude teacher. She is not helpful to my child. This is the same case with my child's father and sister who both had her. She won't respond to me, and is giving the first graders work from her second grade curriculum. It is a shame. She is bringing her personal problems into the classroom affecting the students education.

This sure isn't the place to air your problems or to get help. Perhaps you should go to Mrs. Burchette or talk to the board members.

Agreed - you should talk to the board about a teacher you think is bringing her personal problems into the classroom. If she is doing this - chances are the board knows her problems too and your case is easily proven.....but this certainly isnt the place!

My child had her and she was wonderful! Probably learned more from her than any other teacher. She has been teaching there too long for something to be wrong with her teaching skills. If there was something wrong, it wouldn't have gone this long unnoticed. She taught first grade for many years, so I think she knows what she is doing. As for her personal problems, we all have them and I'm sure they don't affect her teaching skills as much as you are claiming. Maybe her rudeness comes from disrespectful parents who think they are more qualified to be teaching or know the best curriculum for their children. Wouldn't you get frustrated if you had parents giving their opinion about how to teach children when they are not there everyday to see how hard it is to teach those children who may not care about learning because their parents complain about their teacher?

Ms. Pam Lewis is a wonderful, caring, experienced teacher! She is never rude to anyone. She has years of teaching experience in first and second grade. She teaches the standards required by using her tried and true techniques, while also teaching the children civics and manners. We need more teachers like her!

My kids went to Edgemont. They both have college degrees. They both have good jobs and are good productive adults.

I think people are putting down the drain to pay to send their kids to NGS. If every kid that lives in the city went to NGS there would be no room for paying students. I think it is stupid for the county to haul kids to county schools that live in the city and not take them to NGS which is closer then the school they attend. It would save the county money and the kids could go to "their" school. That would however upset the applecart wouldn't it. Can you imagine kids from the projects going to Grammer school and exposing all the kids that their parents think are better then everybody to this class of people? My God what would the children do if they were exposed to the world their Grandfathers and Fathers have helped create.

This is pure bull! As a parent to a NGS student, I take offense to being grouped in as a "parent that think they are better" In my opinion, everyone is equal. Granted, there are some that act like that, but I don't think that attitude is monopolized by NGS. A "Better than You" attitude can be found at all the schools. We all live in Cocke County, let's just get along without downing someone because they attend a certain school.
