martha stewart is a convicted felon, yet she still has a positive influence on Millions of people thru her magazine and TV appearances. she wants to help people decorate, cook, and host rocking parties; others want to teach boys how to knock the crap out of each other and to be tough enough to get the crap knocked out of them. heck, with all the felon parents cussing, drinking, smoking, turning tricks, and shooting pills AT the games, i'd say a felon coach oughta be a requirement.

I do not think anyone with a criminal record or a shady past should ever be around children or teens they have enough bad influences to deal with on a daily basis and if you are lucky enought to get them involved with sports to help occupy their time you are lucky and need good people to mentor & coach them. And a great question why do men volunteer to coach little girls or teen girls or young boys(sounds like joe syndrome to me) when they have no kids or reason to be there? cocke county needs to wake up. All dope heads, drug addicts, child molester's in waiting, and even dramma momma Pedro need not apply. we as parents need to run off all the scum coaching sports or mentoring here in cocke county our kids need to come first.

so you or your husband coach's or your wife volunteers with your local football program. We are so lucky to have such fine non judgemental people looking out for our kids. You can help teach them forgiveness understanding and fair play. Its refreshing to see someone with a open mind and heart on here. Not singling a person out and be littileing them anonymously

A criminal record does't always mean that there is a shady past. I was convicted of a crime almost 15 years ago. The only people that know about this is my wife and my side of the family. I was 18 and hanging around the wrong crowd. This was the only time I got in trouble and yes it was a big kind of trouble but all I want to do is be able to coach my two sons in little league. I will even be coaching with a detective who will be the manager of the team. I have been tossing around the idea of meeting with the board and explaining what I did and what my part in the crime was since we all got charged with the same thing, though I was the only one to get to go to boot camp while the others did hard time in jail. That was 14 long years ago and since then I haven't even gotten a ticket. I did what I did back then and I paid for it. That is not the person that I was back then and is def. not the person I am today. My crime had nothing to do with Children what so ever. Any thoughts?

if you wanna be a coach an you have honestly stayed outta trouble aslong as you weren't charged with domestic violence or a sex crime talk to the football director. They will be able to tell you if you would qualify or not. All the teams are suppose to do background checks and the EMC will do them as well. The leagues should start doin sign ups in March or April. I hope this helps and good luck!

why? would a person stay on as a volunteer that doesnt even have a child that is involved in the program UGH! jana webb, teresa hartsell, and to many others besides that victoria morgan, regina lane maybe people are starting to take notice and our coaches/volunteers should realize that other people could do the job or a least have a shot at it. its not always a bad thing to have change if the person/persons is doing it for the child or children and not for the glory or the power that they think that they might hold and everyone needs to remember that its the child that should gain after all they will soomeday be the ones that are in charge so remember that our children will be the coaches of our future and they hear, see, and know more than what we think they do and are many times a better judge than we are.
For the kids thats why us people that don't have kids playing coach my daughter played at the community center i always liked teresa and shes 1 reason i wanted to coach not my own child cause i don't believe parents should coach there own kids is that not what this is about the kids...

Do you people in Newport get any kind of formal education? I swear you people need to learn how to speak proper English and learn how to spell. How hard is it to spell "would" instead of "wud"?

This is a on going issue. The " felon" in question was convicted 9 years ago in federal court charged with unlawful sale of a firearm. No drug charges not a crime of violence or sexual offence. Every program in this county has a coach that has felony records. Parrottsville edgmont Cosby all have drug offenders car thieves coaching . Heck we even have a drug offender running the rec center and he is a tssaa referee. This guy cares about the kids does a great job and unlike some coaches he doesn't have other motives to coach
While I agree this charge is not a big deal you are WRONG when you say every program in CC has a felon. Not true!
