I would consider enrolling your kids at Newport Grammar if you have Pre-K through 8th grade kids. This is truly a top-notch school. If you care about your child and their future, this is the school for you. They have a straight-A report card from the State of Tennessee. The worst are Edgemont and Northwest. Cocke County High School is mediocre in both academics as well as athletics, so there isn't a lot of options as far as high school choice goes, but CCHS has a lot of Advanced Placement (AP) classes.

The information below came from http://edu.reportcard.state.tn.us/pls/apex/f...

Just use the drop down menus to select Cocke County Schools or Newport City Schools for Newport Grammar to view their scores.

NEWPORT GRAMMAR:
Grades 3-8: TCAP Criterion Referenced Academic Achievement View Chart ?
(3 year average) 2009
CRT Score Grade

EDGEMONT:
Grades 3-8: TCAP Criterion Referenced Academic Achievement View Chart ?

Reading/Language 44 D
Social Studies 43 D
Science 47 C

NORTHWEST:
Grades 3-8: TCAP Criterion Referenced Academic Achievement View Chart ?
(3 year average) 2009

COCKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL:

NGS has excellent scores, but standardized testing doesn't take into account children with special needs and economics has a huge impact on progress as well as family dynamics. Northwest takes children NGS supposedly "isn't qualified to handle." Are their special ed teachers less qualified than the ones at Northwest? Several children at Northwest initially attended NGS, but were asked to leave as they were not able to meet their educational needs. Essentially code for "Your child won't bring our scores down." Northwest has the highest poverty levels of any county or city school and many of the children live in less than adequate family situations. Northwest is an excellent school as the teachers strive to teach the children who are deemed failures by society due to circumstances beyond their control. The teachers and students are dedicated and challenged to meet standardized academic criteria with minimal funding and even less family involvement. Check out Centerview. Scores are good, many children who attend there go on to achieve secondary and tertiary degrees. It is small, not clannish, and deserves a second and third look. Good Luck!

well as a former student from ngs i'd have to say i never excelled at anything once i was past the third grade.they never sent me to northwest and i continuisly made poor grades.about the tcap scores,my seventh and eighth grade year there was supposed rumors of falsified tcap score and teachers helping students with the tests which is against the rules. i dont know how it is now though,i've been out of that school for five years.

Grammar School is a joke. If you do not put certain name brands on your children, they are taught they are not accepted! Those are the kids who end up on drugs. Many of them have from Grammar School. COsby ends up with many drug problems. Northwest is the lowest school, but they welcome any student. Edgemont has almost 700 kids and has to deal with countless behavior problems due to lack of discipline at home. You had better go to Parrottsville, Smokey Mtn, or Grassy Fork. They are your safest three from drugs, not being taught to wear only certain things to be accepted, and high scores.

Newport Grammar School's teacher almost all have a Master's degree or higher, many of which are in specific disciplines such as special education. The school is known for drawing the best teachers from various school systems, because they encourage teachers to advance their "know how" with children's needs. The students from NGS are obvious in many high school classes. This is because thy leave elementary school prepared in content. Also, the school has summer and school year afterschool programs for remediation AND advanced students. Although many people who went to the county system snub their nose as NGS as the upty school, it is NOT. What it is is a school focused on academic and grounded on principles of every student excelling. This is coming from q parent who moved their child to NGS from Cocke Co. Schools and have been amazed by the teachers my child had in 4th grade through 8th grade.

Oh really. Well my newphew was struggling and in each grade level. Where was all the help from these glorified teachers then. Uh, yeah it wasnt anywhere to be FOUND!!!! We had to move him from Grammar and he now goes to Grassy Fork and is making As and Bs!!!!!! Now those are teachers who care with a principal who cares. Grammar was a joke. They pick favorites and only care about weeding out the kids who cant make the scores!!! Think long and hard before you go tho this disaster of a school!!!!!!!!!!

Grassy Fork has the highest scores!!! Way to go Shannon Grooms and his staff. They must be unbelievable!!!!!!!!!! Look it up online/ Parrosttsville and Del Rio are next. Then next was Centerview and Cosby. Next comes Bridgeport and Edgemont. And Northwest is at the bottom.

When you look it up also look at the number of students enrolled and take that into account. Of course Grassy will have the highest scores, its the smallest school in the county with the least amount of students.

It all depends in what area you are wanting to move to. We have school districts and if you are in that district your child should attent that school.

If you look at the details of the state report card for schools you will see something very interesting. At Newport Grammar, the students who are considered the lowest scores or academically at risk should be at the bottom 25 percentile ranking like they are everywhere else. HOWEVER, these students score higher than the 60 percentile ranking in the state at NGS. That means that students at this school who are considered low are doing above and beyond what they are expected to perform. This school has a progressive program that works to put students into the regular classroom with special education teachers and an assistant going into the language and math classes. Yeah, that means they are putting three adults in the room with the students and working very hard to move those students forward. If someone you know did not become a straight A student there, keep in mind that happens anywhere. However, one thing to really think about is that the school really challenges students they are a very very challenging school just like all schools should be. If you read about our local schools in the paper you will see that the school is always adding to its challenge. Next year they are putting a spanish course in place for 7 and 8th grade. The students will leave NGS with one of their high school credits already completed. For many years, the school has offered algebra for 8th grade students (another high school credit). Students at schools everywhere can make straight A report cards all the time in classes where they are expected to do nothing, but that doesn't help them at all. We need to stop being obsessed with making an A and start worrying about the kid actually learning something. If anything grades should disappear and students should be rated on making progress. That would mean even the smart kids would have to learn more than they already knew!
