Well, it sure looks like Morgan is part of the good old buddy system. So I guess that the City and State cleared him of any wrong doing and the 3 motorcycles and 2 new Dodge Chargers the inmates are going to drive them around in their basketball play areas. I thought that the City was concerned about the many mentally disturbed inmates. The money spent on the cars, motorcyles and Christmas parties for the Sheriffs Office could have gone to hiring one or maybe two counselors to help these inmates in need. Way to go to the Management of Newport News. Taxpayers it looks like we really need to put someone who cares in office November 3, 2009.

An audit was done, charges have been explained,so what's the problem? As usual, it's blame the Black man. Thank you Gabe Morgan for being an upstanding person. I know it's getting close to re
election time and the buzzards are swarming. Just keep doing your job and things will work out. The rest of you, get to work and let the Sheriff do his job.

It's the good old boy system in every Sheriff's Department in the state. They all say when they want to get elected this is not going to fly if you elect me as Sheriff. And the next thing you know they are Sheriff and some get it all while others get nothing. If the public would pay attention they could figure out for themselves who are the butt kisser's in each department. Work for a Sheriff's Department and you will get the full effects of this, they suck the passion for your job right out of you with the Good Old Boy System. So don't think Newport News is any different from York, Gloucester, Middlesex, Mathews or Hampton.

Why does the sheriff department need three harleys, lights on there cars, sirens in the there cars, etc. They don't respond to emergency calls or serve crimimal warrants. The serve civil warrants.I have never seen a city waist so much money. We need an election as soon as possible.

Other sheriff's have told me that the NN canteen fund, drink machines, etc. generates much more than 50K per year. Even considering 50K added to 100K means that Morgan has more than 150K per year to use inside the jail. If I recall the City of NN just paid 37K for some type of detector equipment and 47K plus for a mental health counselor. These expenses,it seems, could have easily been paid for (and legitimately) from the canteen fund. The audit may have cleared Morgan from from a legal standpoint, but it is clear that he certainly used bad judgement and his steward ship of tax payer money is poor.
Also, are the motorcycles being used? I have heard they have been parked in the City Employee garage since purchased.

Interesting that the Newport News Sheriff, who responsibilities by law are Corrections, Court Security and Civil Process with no law enforcement responsibilities, Needs Three $ 11, 000 Harley Davidson Motor Cycles. I sure that money could better used in ensuring the safety and security of his deputies working in an over populated jail. Maybe he should use it to sue the State like the Va Beach Sheriff. Or even better, hire one additional deputy to assist in the jail operations. Shame, VA Sheriff’s always want to be cowboys…….

There are people who about "things" going on, but, would not have a job to return to.

I wonder if the Auditor of Public Records go to our areas here? I also wonder how many auditors are on staff.....any info factually on that?

1st off, this is not a race issue! It's a money issue! The Sheriff is spending my tax money on harleys, chargers and dogs! Not to mention parties! Why is the city allowing this??? For goodness sakes, we need a new Sheriff in town who has some knowledge about corrections to start spending money on things that make sense!!!!! Gabe Morgan has had almost three years to do his job...he hasn't. It's time for him to GO!

I have no connection to the Sheriff's Dept. but they did make some agreement to assist with some aspects of law enforcement. Never the less, harley's use much less gas....and they do drive a lot serving warrents etc. There are also those who complain.

*LOL* I think the cycles are city vehicles. They shouldn't be parked in the city parking garage?

Money spent on educating the inmates is money well spent unless YOU want to pay for them to be incarcerated for the rest of their lives. It is expensive, you know?

The detecting equipment, I believe, is to find your relative or mine with dementia..

How about you join the Department - Sheriff's or Police. You know best.

Why don't you your time looking at how much those motorcylces were used in the past 12 months. NONE....So have your facts straight about using them to serve civil process. They have been collecting dust in the city parking garage for the past 6 plus months. Furthermore, Morgan quoted "We bought them to help the police out with traffice control when we have had a hurricane. Check you fact out before comment.

For those who think they know all about the Morgan System..Let me tell you the detectors were orginally put in place by the Late Great Sheriff Chuck Moore. So dont praise Morgan for that. All he did was purchase updated equipment.

"Political character assassination attempt" come on Sheriff Morgan, is that the best you can come up with. If a citizen of Newport News is not happy with the way money is being spent it is not political. Newport News is in a cash crunch, and all departments in this city need to cut back. Your purchase of motorcycles and dogs on patrol is not helping the over crowding of the jail. You said, you would do something about over crowding and yet you have done little. The city farm still has empty beds. You have never said what the motorcycles are being used for. The fire detection equipment should have be bought out of the canten fund not more money from the city. All the taxpayers are asking is use "Our" money wisely.

Chuck Moore was a joke! He was a real good old boy! Morgan has done some good things and has done some things that make you scratch your head. Glad to see that the audit clears him.

Maybe this will be a wake up call for him to focus on the real duties of a city Sheriff (court security, civil process and jail) and stop doing the NNPD's job. I am sorry but I do not see anybody that is currently running that would be able to do the job. Feenie Carter..... You have got to be kidding....

I can tell you That FEENIE has my vote. Morgan has divided the sheriffs dept. and has city employees enraged.
The overcrowding at the jail and empty beds at the City farm is outragous!!!!!!!!!
Can't wait till election time or till he's out.
