I have a job opportunity in Newport News, Va. I am looking for guidance on best areas to live in or around NN.
I am looking for around a 30-45 minute or less commute, if possible.
I am focused on a cleaner, safe, quiet, kid friendly area to live in. I have a child, so I am looking for good daycare and best places for schools as well.
My budget for a home is around $200-$250.

Help?

@Mrb.......I hate to be the bayer of bad news but your best bet is to stay in Nashville. The police force and chief are corrupt, the school system sucks and in general Newport News just sucks!!! Unless you can find something in between Menchville Road and Hilton on the warwick side.....don't come. Everything outside of that spectrum is as ghetto as you can get. You may look into maybe Poquoson but other than that, this area reflects its nickname......BAD NEWZ VA!!! Sorry about that

Not go anywhere east of Williamsburg unless you want to put bars on your windows. It's thugville.

IF you are a minority, you are welcome in this smidget area blue DNC thug area;

Not true on most points. I agree with the area suggested. Much lower in crime than others. Home prices very - a lot of homes available. My husbands a police officer and not corrupt nor are 99 percent of his co-workers. Yes the police chief is not well liked, but unless you work for him that is not an issue. All areas have their problems, the same as you have where you live now. Yorktown is close by and appears to have better school system. There are magnate schools and gifted programs available in Newport News if you qualify or live in that school zone. With any move you may make you need to weigh the pros and cons. Traffic issues, how close you are to shopping, resturants, parks, etc....

The truth is the police chief is hated by everyone on the department. He is a joke who uses his position to promote his own interests and to increase his retirement benefits. Until changes are made stay away from Newport News.

May be rue, is true, whatever. If that is the reason you would tell people to not move to Newport News that is sad. As I said my husband is an officer for NNPD. Chief Fox DOES NOT determine how we live, or our happiness in the community. This thread is about moving to Newport News not another outlet to trash Fox.

Mr B, I'm assuming you meant $200K -$250K for a home PURCHASE. Someone posted above to look into Poquoson, save yourself the trouble, not too many houses in that price range on Bull Island. Nicer homes over there start at $400K.

You CAN buy a nice home in NN in that price range, unfortunately school safety kind of trumps that, and with a kid in the picture, I would seriously look elsewhere.

Look into Toano up in James City County. Nice homes, fair prices (for the most part) AND the schools are top notch. Real nice tax base and the Board of Supervisors really take care of the school system there. New schools and renovations abound. Very high graduation rates, with a very good curriculum and mix of classes. Toano would put you in the Warhill High School zone, 3 or 4 years old and a wonderful school!!! Toano Middle School students are required to wear uniforms, prices are reasonable. As long as there isn't a wreck near the Ft. Eustis interchange you can easily be in NN in 30 minutes.

Hope this helps.

FYI, the last 3 chiefs of police in NN were constantly trashed, nothing new there...NNPD has a pretty decent force, they're just stretched so thin, it's like they're chasing their tails a lot of times.

Ask the 86 year old guy who's been robbed three times in the last two months if Newport News is a nice place to live.

NN Shipyard retired(shaking my head)..Why in the World would you move to oppression? The day I moved to YC after the ghetto(which is ALL of NN), I thought I had entered paradise. Don't be a fool. If you don't take the word of a lifelong resident(former), just visit. Get a hotel, drive around a day or 2. Look at the schools, go on the NNPS websites, etc. Watch the local news...You will save yorself and family from a life of misery.

I have a business in NN, I own a carwash and it is in a rough neighborhood, coin box has been vandalized so many. One day I caught a kid who was trying to get into the box so I called cops. The kid was blk and the cop came with same color decline to write a report because the box was look like already broken, the only time I found them efficient is when they wants DONATION.

If you have kids I wouldn't even consider Newport News or Hampton. Also, both cities have some of the highest taxes in the entire area. York County has some of the best schools around but your budget might not get you much there. with a bit more commute you could consider James City County or Williamsburg.

Personally I left Newport News after 15 years for Isle of Wight County and have never regretted that decision for a moment. We have been here for 12 years and I still believe the commute is well worth the improvement in our quality of life when we are home.

Good Luck.

There are some nice areas in Newport News but schools and the lifestyle are better in York County, Williamsburg/James City County or Poquoson. House prices may average more than you indicated in those areas but you may be able to find something nice in the fringe areas. All fall into your desired commute time. Contrary to what some of the naysayers would have you believe, the VA peninsula is a wonderful place to live though somewhat more expensive than what you may be used to. I lived in Seaford when I first moved here 30 years ago and loved it. I now live in James City County and can attest this is a great area.

Newport News, Virginia is by far the worst place to live in the country, the weather sucks they have bs state taxes, VDOT, OMG where to [email protected]@ VDOT is a complete joke, they start projects and never seem to finish, when they do they screw it up so bad they are back in a couple years to rip it up and do it again. Potholes, WOW -- unbelievable. They make you go through the 7th circle of hell just to put your car on the road, with inspection stickers you must get each year, you must pay personal property taxes or they "STEAL" your license. Driving is a right, but not here. Anyone in their right mind would not live here, there are a lot of Military here and I feel so bad for them they are stuck, I have lived here 30 years and moved down south about 8 years ago, best choice I ever made, I'm here for the holidays now and can't wait to leave. I ask my old friends, what the hell do you stay here for, they say "well it's home" -- no this is hell, and yes the NNPD is very corrupt they should ALL BE JAILED, they think they are above everyone, the women cops out here are all the same, bull dikes that think you owe them something, they play God here, they are the joke of the East Coast, they only believe in free speech if they agree with what you say, corrupt & cocky -- that is every single copy out here, and there are a lot of them, red light cams every where, a clear rights violation because they take a pic of your tag not the driver -- I admit the cams work but not fair at all, that is theft, they have no clue who is driving your car they just send you a $200+ fine -- N.N. VA, worthless

If you think NN is bad, don't even bother with Gloucester. The sheriff is corrupt and the rednecks marry their cousins, all this on TOP of the crap you loaded for NN!!!!!!!!!!
