What are the city/state laws regarding what age a child can be left alone? I live in Virginia Beach and have previously been told there is not age limit. What do the police departments and social services think the appropriate age is? Is it okay for a 9-year old to go home after school and be alone for an hour until their parent gets there?

The city does not base an age on maturity. You might have a 9 year old that can and have a 15 year old that can't. This is what the city told me. I left two 9 year old's alone for 2 hours a day after school years ago and they did just fine. GOOD LUCK!!!

Leave your neighbor alone. If you had cut your grass and cleaned up your yard they would of never called codes and compliance on you....

People, I apologize for the media's lack of info. The child was not left alone. The sitter was next to the infant at the time of the mauling. Bottom line it that at no time was the baby left alone with the dog. The mother was unavailable to allow us permission to release information and we were still attempting to piece the story together when the PIO was called.

Yes the babysitter should be charged. I don't care what kind of dog you have a baby does not belong on the floor with an animal around. I have a dog, two cats, and a 16 month old son. When my baby boy is up and about in my home, the animals are not allowed into the areas where he plays and they are never allowed into his room. Too many things could go wrong. I for one would rather be safe than sorry.

I swear every week I read another story of a child attacked by a pit bull. When are people going to finally realize that these dogs and children just don't mix? Of course, there are the adults and the elderly being attacked by them as well, but the children are the worst to read about as they are totally helpless to defend themselves against these animals.

It sells news to Report about Pit Bulls. What you do not read or apparently know, is they are not the number one biting dog breed. You don't read about the kids mauled by Boston Terriers, Dachshunds, Pekinese, Cocker spaniels, Beagles, these breeds do not insight hysteria and sell news. It is not the breed. There are no BAD dogs. Just bad Owners. This pup was only a year old. The owner should have been more careful about the baby regardless of the breed of dog. I have seen tiny dogs nearly remove a 3 year olds eye,and rip off a kids ear! I have friends that have been viciously attacked by all manner of breeds. It is about responsibility. People simply do not know how to be personally responsible any more.

Before everybody throws stones at the babysitter, nobody that has commented here was there today when the incident happened, it is all hear say now. I'm sure if the mother of the baby knew that her son was going to be mauled by a pit-bull today, she would have never left him with the babysitter. Every dog has the ability to bite a child, and to be raised to be good or bad. There are some dogs that cannot be around children. You have to be careful when you decide you want a pit-bull, like check out the breeder, and if you have children, you might want to decide to purchase another breed for the family. All dogs can bite or attack, its just that pit-bulls have the ability and the mind set to attack differently and sometimes deadly. This was a horrible situation that happened today, and I only can imagine what it was like to have to pull away that child from a pit-bulls fury. I pray for the family of the dog, and the parents of that little boy, and the boy himself, that he will survive and have a normal life.

Don't be ignorant, The other breeds do bite, maul even Kill babies. You just do not get to hear about it. All breeds have tendancies and inate charachteristics.

When will these STUPID people learn? Also WHY would you let your child into a home with a PIT BULL? I think BOTH babysitter AND Parents are to blame. Im praying for the little guy, god bless him.

Why are animals be left alone with small children. If I was a babysitter with animals, they would be locked up or cage. Families that need child care should not leave their children with child care providers that have dangerous animals for pets. Futhermore the child care provide in this case needs to be charged child neglect and child endangerment.

I bear a scar on my leg from a pit bull. My brother was nearly killed by a pit bull, rottweiler and german shepard attack. Other countries have banned pit bulls and I think it's time for our country to the same. Yes, these dogs are sweetheart as puppies and adorable. And, usually the puppies are given away for FREE! The majority of pit bull owners in my area are of low socio-economic status. They don't not train their animals, they chain them up and leave them out in the dirt. I worked for a veterinarian in high school and met a little girl whose face was partially torn off by her brothers' pit bull. It disturbed me that the parents did not destroy the dog, in fact, they kept the dog. It doesn't matter if there is someone with the child when the dog is around. It only matters when it's too late, sadly. I hope this boy gets a second chance at his life.

I get so tired of people judging a dog by its breed, where is the ownership in bad owners if you treat a dog with no respect you will get no respect. People don't understand the type of histeria they cause when all they write about is how mean pits are. You have no idea what kind of descrimination my family goes through because people like you have a bias against this beautiful animal. I love my dog and he loves his family. I have a 3 year old pit and a 6 month old son and they play together everyday. He is his protector and friend and i would never own another breed. I wish they told the truth about how many smaller breeds harm children. Read the stats. Pomeranians kill more children a year than do pits. People need to stop preying on this breed.

I can not believe you sit on this computer and say that the majority of people that own these dogs come from low-economic areas. My husband and I do very well for ourselfs and we own a pit. When was the last time you heard of a pit form downtown mauling a child. NEVER!! And I think that some people shouldn't have children (i'm an RN) but you don't see me protesting for sterilization.

Both parents are in the military? My father was in the Army for 34 years so I wonder why these parents left their child with a dog-owner to baby-sit their child. Didn't they bother to scout the place to see what problems there might be in the house? I wouldn't leave an infant or any small child with a sitter who had animals. I love animals but even a gerbil can bite or scratch if it gets out of its cage and a child can overturn a tankful of fish. You just don't place a child in a possibly dangerous situation.
