Nurse is charged with leaving her children home alone

A nurse who police say left her children home alone for the second time this year has been charged with three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

This is a bad situation, but its one many people can find themselves in especially with the economic crisis, money is getting tight. I feel for her because she's a women who is going out and working hard as a nurse to provide for her children, but she probably does not have the money for before and after school care for three children.

I once worked for social services in VA and you'd be surprised at the people, who come and get benefits, people who look well off and some are actually middle class, but still may qualify for certain benefits and they definitely utilize them. A women whose family income was 80K/yr once called in to see if she could qualify for child care benefits. People shouldn't be ashamed to use social services because many supposedly "well off" people do. Don't be fooled.

I don't see how others can judge her when this economy is so horrible that people are losing their jobs, homes, and many from all social classes are having a hard time with the recession.

I doubt she is a nurse. Probably a nurses aide. Some of those nurses aides think when they put on a pair of scrubs, they can be anything they want. She definitely doesn't look like a nurse.

I kinda feel for the lady.
She was trying to eek out a living, probably couldnt afford child care.
And quite honestly, some 8 year olds are better at home than some 17 yr olds.
Just depends on the kids.

Of course we dont know the whole story as to why someone called the authorities. Maybe the kids were running wild and making trouble. Or some other sort of unsafe condition.

Probably the same 'snitch' that peers through the corner of the curtains from inside her house when a drug deal is going down and then says: "I didnt see a thang."

Some of you are makings some really ignorant comments. I'm a single mother of one. I work for a living and can afford to put my child in daycare. Unfortunately, some single parents cannot afford child care for numerous reasons. It's hard enough for me and I only have one child. Child care is expensive. You all do not know this woman. Please do not assume all BLACK single parents that live in Newport News are on welfare. I am not. I bust my butt each and everyday to provide for my child. I don't have it easy and with today's economy the way it is, it is getting harder and harder. Some people(black white, yellow, purple) have to make decisions that may not always be right but its works in the mean time. I'm not condoning leave a child home alone for any reason. However, as a single mother I understand how hard it to make it out here alone. Many people make the same decisions Ms. Hooker has made. Not just black people. So before you pass judgement on people, know the whole story. And realize that not all people were born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Lastly, for the person who made the comment "the 44th President will take care of you", you are correct. He will take care of all of us who have suffered the last 8 years under the soon to be former president. I can't believe how ignorant people still are when it comes to race.

i used to know her. shes a good person, just with too much stuff to take care of. she has or had a husband who doesnt really care, got kicked out of the army and i guess dumped her here. theyre from missisippi and the kids are sweet. she as 4 of them. she has no relatives that she can rely on and shes in a bind. no i dont condone what she did, but women who dont have any help from a partner o relative has to make hard choices. we as women sometimes hafto make hard choices. i guess she thought her daughter would be ok with the 3 boys. if u read this, deedee, im praying for u.

One thing you will always get from this board is stupid comments from stupid people. Don't let it get to you and don't fall to their kind of thinking. I know I get frustrated from some of the comments on here but I just think folks who feel that they can sit behind their computer and type anything regardless of how it sounds or how it makes others feel really have no clue on how to really deal with society. Just continue to voice your opinion and maybe someone will read it and make a choice to try to help instead of harm.

I only see two posters here that know anything about Ms. Hooker. Her husband abandoned her and the three kids and left them homeless. Second the kids did miss the bus. One of the boys called the Social Worker that was helping her get on her feet. The lined up her job and got them into a Motel. Then the police went to her Graduation Ceremony and promptly arrested her within minutes of her graduating class valedictorian. The arresting officers resisted the Felony arrest and were able to choose the lesser crime. She'll still pay, but with a felony, you slugs worried about paying for three more kids have nothing to worry about. She gets some parenting classes, keeps her job and raises her own kids. By the way, leaving an 8, 7 and 5 year old alone for 30 minutes is poor judgement, but when you think your neighbor who usually makes sure they get on the bus fails you... well you get arrested and hope the arresting officer has a bit of compassion.
