I've just seen a really odd video on youtube, uploaded a couple of days ago.

It purports to show military police standing at various 'checkpoints' in Newport. The film crew interview a couple of the MP's, who say they are simply helping out the local police with traffic control.

They say they have been doing this for 5 or 6 years.

A couple of the questions seemed to me to be attemting to 'lead' the respondents....and there is ominous sounding music playing over parts of the film.

The comments after the video seem to comprise a lot of conspiracy theorists...

I'd like to know what the people of Newport make of this video. I hope someone can help.

By the way, your city looks really nice!

This was shot the day/evening of the WEBN fireworks. From what I saw they were directing traffic. I think someone is blowing it out of proportion.

Anyone know why MP's were brought it? Were they fed MPs or state MPs?

Thank you Newport Visitor, that's what I thought.

Cashflow, they were brought in to help the local police with traffic control (something which I understand is permissable). I think they were just M.P's doing their job and being asked ridiculous leading questions.

Since yesterday, having viewed some of the videos made by the same group, I have come to the conclusion that they're trying to alarm people.

They claimed in writing that they asked these MP's whether they would shoot people, put people in ovens, etc etc, but none of that was shown in the video, so we only have their word for it. Nearly every response to the video is from conspiracy theorists, and the video is doing the rounds on certain 'extreme' websites.

That said I would still welcome any further information from locals!

But who were the MPs? State or federal. Easy question to answer.

The military police are KY. National Guard and is brought in for traffic control and in case there may be other problems. There are close to 100,000 people on fireworks night in Newport and the Newport Police Dept. is obviously outnumbered. After the fireworks there are usually many fights and the Guard is here to assist. There are also police officers from other areas in Northern Ky. to assist. These men and women do a great job helping out. This is not the military butting in but trying to keep people safe. Instead of putting useless propaganda out there maybe they should investigate real problems in this country.

It's really simple,
Newport Police 43 officers
Riverfest crowd 250,000
The city declares an emergency, making state resources available including the National Guard. These resources assist local law enforcement in making the event as safe as possible. The National Guard mission includes assisting local agencies in time of emergency.
Too bad the guard didn't bring the black helicopter, it would have fueled the fire.
The guard is on "state active duty", which again is under the guard mission.
Hopefully the guys from Ohio take their foil helmets and go back across the river.

Thank you wubba and brat body for clearing that up for me.

Some people are pushing a very curious (putting it kindly) agenda on you tube.

Cashflow, the question you asked was *not* easy for someone like me, who wouldn't recognise one uniform from the next.

If having a social event constitutes an "emergency" so that MPs can be utilized there is no reason why any social event cannot result in MPs being brought in to control the crowd. That is not what our quasi-military and military are for. In my view - not a good move.

This "social event" draws 250,000 people, which makes it serious public safety concern on many levels. The resources of local government are not adequate to deal with this situation, which does constitute an emergency.

If you notice in the video only the MP's are armed, the other soldiers aren't MP's and only assist in directing traffic. This frees up local police to deal with more pressing problems, the MP's work directly with and assist local law enforcement.

The same scenario occurs in Louisville during derby week and the KY Guard is used in the same capacity.

The MP's have helped the NPD with the WEBN fireworks for the very reasons listed above.. the NPD is outnumbered at that festival. I think they have been around since the year of the infamous "blue flu".... They are just there to help when needed. In all the years I have never heard of any real action on their part and they mostly help with traffic and crowd control. I think this is a case of people OVERREACTING bit time.

Then maybe our city shouldn't host something that is an emergency.

We could all live encased in bubble wrap as well to prevent possible injury......

The event has grown to the point that additional resources are needed. The KY National Guard have been working this for over 20yrs. There have been no problems with it until two paranoid conspiracy theorists posted a poorly made video. The video has been debunked and your arguments hold no merit.

If I were you I'd petition the state to cancel Riverfest, The Kentucky Derby, and Thunder over Louisville. I'm no fan of big government but, this is a proper and prudent use of available resources.

WEBN is the cause of this event. It cost the city tons of money they really don't have just to keep there city safe. This is not a city event. Its something that has been dumped in there lap for 30 years.

It's like that 1 day out of the year here. It may be in violation of the Posse Comitatus Act but really doesn't cause any problems that I'm aware of at-least. However breaking the law is breaking the law and the constitution needs to be taken more serious. That's why everybody should be voting Rand Paul for Kentucky senate.
