current tax in Jonesboro is 8.5 %, before the jail tax, Newport was approx9%..population in Newport is approx 7832 , Jonesboro is approx 67263. If each person spent $100 in Newport the taxes made on their purchases would be $70,488. If all Jonesboro people made a $100 purchase , Jonesboro would make $571,735.50 in taxes . Although Newport tax is higher than Jonesboro, Jonesboro made $501,735.50 MORE than Newport. Reason= more population. Why are their taxes lower= more people spending money. In order for Newports tax revenue to be like Jonesboro 1) higher taxes.....wait they already have higher taxes.2) higher population....wait no one wants to live here. 3) more businesses ... Wait businesses don't want to come cause the population is too low. Guess we will have to go with number one till we can figure out how to make 2&3 to happen.

Cryptique you stated Newport's population is 7832 but everybody fails to realize they add the 1800+ inmates that are locked up in ADC to our population also. So technically there are only around 6000 people or less in Newport. The town motto is proud past bright future but at the rate this town is headed its future is not going to be so bright!

I believe you missed the entire point. But, having pointed that out, it just proves less revenue because obviously the inmates can't shop. I was using the census numbers merely to show that population will affect the amount of tax revenue a city will receive.so comparing a big city to a small is "apple's and oranges" Sorry I wasn't more clear.

<quoted text>I voted for the $ for the economice developement, yes for the $ for the college. I have yet to see the benefits in either one. There comes a time when enough is enough! I am tired of being screwed. Pull the $$ from john chadwell's office, seems like it should go to a good cause.
Where is John Chadwell's office now? Seems like he's always at the flower shop now.
