So there is a vote coming up for a 3/4 cent total sales tax on February 12. Word is that it will be split into two taxes:

3/8 cent with a sunset after several years for BUILDING a jail
3/8 cent with NO SUNSET for FUNDING and OPERATIONS of the jail

Current tax rate in Newport is 9.0%, with an additional 0.5% added for the new highway tax. This will make our sales tax rate (if both pass) at 10.25%.

Do you plan to vote FOR, AGAINST, or split your votes on these taxes?

Discussion please.

The big amount later is that we will pay another county to house our most severe criminals and the rest will run free still committing crimes against everyone if this tax doesn't pass which will ultimately break this county! This tax will benefit every person and it is a sales tax which makes it fare for everyone! If u think the jail doesn't benefit you then think again... This jail tax will benefit every citizen of this county. It will allow our law enforcement agencies and the court systems to enforce the law with actual consequences and these criminals that are out committing crimes against the "Good" citizens of this county without consequence won't b on the street if they are in jail where the are supposed to be! Anyone who would not vote for this IMPROVEMENT in our community is probably the same ones that want to hold this community back or the ones that are escaping through the cracks of the system that we as citizens of Jackson county have the opportunity to FIX!!! Vote YES for your community's safety!!!

They need to put a tax on alcohol since we have dry counties almost all around us.

Spend... spend...spend....Always the anwser for cs 2. Why are the SEVERE CRIMINALS not in the big house just out side of town. This would make room for the drunks and drug abusers.
When will it end, when most of our town is converted to Jail Cells. The way things are going around here, in 5 yrs there will be another tax to be voted on for another Jail add on.
Sounds like cs2 has some land they need to unload.
Year after Year another group of criminals will be out on our Streets, no matter how much money is put into the system.
Just saying!

Probably one of those vote for it now or they will just include it in property taxes later without a choice.

Regardless of the politics in Washington, we have to have a new jail! Our crime rate in Jackson County is pretty high. This is because we have no way of getting the criminals off the streets. 10.25% is high but you will pay more in the long run. A officer takes someone to jail and they are released before the officer is done with his paper work. This is happening now! We just simply need a new jail.

Good grief you are obviously misinformed. Hopefully I can give you some information that you must not be aware of.#1... The land for the proposed new Jackson county jail is already owned by the county. Blows your theory of land that needs to be unloaded.#2... There is a thing called criminal procedure that everyone in this great country we live in is entitled too. You can't arrest a murderer in the A.M. And have them in prison that afternoon. It's just doesn't work that way. Criminals charged with severe crimes often spend a year or more in the county jail before going to trial or being convicted and then they can be sent to prison. And if your response is going to be that needs to be changed then everyone will agree. Get with the US Supreme Court and get the laws changed and see what you can get done to alleviate the burden that the local level has to deal with.#3.... Most of the town converted to jails? Come on! That is just silly talk! The current jail that we have has 27 beds and often holds approx. 50+inmates. The new jail proposal will last this county 30 years guaranteed and probably a lot longer than that. There is room for expansion. The Quorum Court is thinking ahead! The jail will be paid for in about 15 years and then one 3/8 a cent tax will sunset/drop. The other will continue so that the jail can operate and keep our communities safe. And last but not least... If you are "just saying" make sure you know what you are saying.

We cannot keep on raising sales tax. A 1/2 cent sales tax was just passed for the highway department, making our sales tax in Newport 9 1/2 cents, this Jail sales of 3/4 cent would make it 10 1/4 cent. This is not the answer to the problem. Sales Tax are high enough, we need to use the current money available wisely and stop waste.

When People look for a Home town to Start a Family or retire to, 10 1/4 cent sales tax is not a drawing point. Plus a Jail the size of a small Federal Prison does not look inviting. A new Jail is just an invitation to more crime, because...free
Medical....free Dental....free room with cable TV....Free Food....Free Phyical Fittness Area.... Hard Working folks are doing without while others live the Good Life....
Yes, I might be Misinformed as CS2 says, but I try not to wear Blinders either.

The tax is high but you don't have to go to jail for free food, medical and a place to stay. Just sign up for it at DHS it is free for all! We have to have a new jail. No if, and's or buts! We have a lot of crime in Jackson County. So that means we need a deterrent for the bad guys! The current jail is a cake walk. We have no place to house the inmates. It would cost the county and all other law enforcement agencies over twice the amount of money to take instead to other facilities. Plus if I was looking for a place to live and raise a family. I would feel much better if my community had a secure place to house the bad guys! Taxes suck but like everything else it will only get higher in the end.

Who's it going to benefit? A new jail will benefit everyone in this county! This isn't something that's going to line someone's pockets. It will keep the criminals out of our communities to keep our family and our property safe!

I am ABSOLUTELY opposed to this tax.

WHY?

Because I feel like the SHERIFFS DEPT is wasting money day in and day out.

DRIVE BY THERE TOMORROW DURING THE DAY and count the new SUVs sitting out there. Everyone during the day drives a big fancy SUV. They drive better vehicles than MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTY.

Then look around at WHO IS RIDING WITH THEM. They ride their wives around ALL THE TIME. You see them with their families SHOPPING, driving around that COUNTY CAR and that COUNTY GAS.

THIS IS SO WASTEFUL

BUT THEY WANT ANOTHER 3/8 CENT to "fund" the jail. The money goes to the SHERIFFS DEPT and they will end up using that 3/8 cent for GOD KNOWS WHAT. Why do they need MORE MONEY to fund a jail? They fund one RIGHT NOW as it is. What are they going to spend that extra HALF A MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR that comes from a 3/8 cent tax on?

I heard they will need to hire 6 jailers at least. That's good. We need jobs. 6 jailers x $20,000 a year is $120,000. I doubt the jailers even make that much. They could cut some of the jobs at the court house or stop buying SUVs and pay for those spots without raising MINE AND YOUR TAXES.

THIS THING WILL PASS UNLESS we all get out there and talk to our friends and encourage them to vote AGAINST both of the taxes. 10 1/4 cents on the dollar is WAY TOO MUCH.

SEND A MESSAGE ON FEBRUARY 12 THAT WE, THE CITIZENS OF JACKSON COUNTY, ARE FED UP WITH HIGH TAXES AND WASTEFUL SPENDING. WE HAVE PLENTY OF THAT IN LITTLE ROCK, PLENTY IN WASHINGTON, AND WE DON'T NEED IT HERE.

But the tax is not necessary. The county needs to tighten things up and pay for it with a bond like everyone else. THEY ALREADY GET A PROPERTY TAX FROM EVERY PROPERTY OWNER IN THIS COUNTY. Why do they need a sales tax on top of that?? Why not manage the money we have already instead of spending like crazy? Is this Washington DC or Newport, AR!????

THEY SHOULD ALREADY BE DOING THIS. Why are we coddling prisoners? Why do we not have tents up in the back like the Sheriff in Arizona? This county should stand up to the liberals who want to baby the prisoners and take a hard line approach like some other sheriffs have done. Don't like the conditions of the jail? THEN DONT GET LOCKED UP.
