Has anyone tried to take an anmial to the humane society lately and been told they weren't taking any right now?? I was told there was a wait list...???? Isn't that place like 21,000 sq ft? Im sorry but I find it so irritating that so much money was put into that place and its huge but they won't take any animals!!!! I was there a couple months ago and there were only a handful of dogs and cats but they say there is no room. I am an animal lover and its hard to think of animals not having anywhere to go especially in bad weather when the whole purpose of the Humane Society is to get them adopted.

You need to take that complaint to that piece of trash county manager and all of those crooked commissioners. That place is never gonna change. Problem with the whole thing is that all of those bastards still get voted in every time!!!! Good luck and God bless!

Dear Irritated, You have my support totally. It is ridiculous tht animals are turned away from such an expensive beautiful facility as the humane society. Guess my grandma was right.. beauty is only skin deep and things aren't always as they appear!!!!!

for shame! even the biggest facility can become overcrowded, and with the numbers of unspayed and unneutered animals in our county, it does happen. If you must blame somebody, blame irresponsible pet owners who don't get their animals fixed or who let them wander astray.

Kudos to all the hardworking staff at Avery County Humane Society. Put yourself in their shoes, day by day, and see if you're still as critical.

That place is the biggest humane society I ever seen and my god it looks like a ritz carlton!! It is 21,000 sq ft and how many millions of dollars did it cost??? It is their JOB to take in animals!!!!!!!! Not turn them away and leave them out in the cold without food or water! And you know, maybe if they were a little nicer when you talk to them and not make you feel like you are bothering them I might have some sympathy..but I don't. I never said they didn't work, I am saying its ridiculous that they are turning animals away when thats the whole point of a humane society anyway!! People don't get their fixed and people let their dogs wander...its part of what makes the world go round. Thats part of the reason a "Humane Society" came about in the first place. There are so many other rescues and Humane society who are barely scraping by but still won't turn a dog away. Thats my point...its not ok

I used to be a supporter and YES they do NOT take in animals in need. To the OP....OMG, I'd bet my life your response was from a Board Member...they DO NOT WANT TO HEAR the truth. And when I found out they are NOT no kill....OMG, it's on their website and it's a LIE. When I posted on High Country Press they used the EXACT WORDS..."Shame on you"....Shame on them. I don't blame the Commissioners, let's not give up the mission to save animals. The Board paid for and got their brass plaques. IMO, they don't give a 'rat's ass about Avery County or the animals'Honestly, they built a testiment to themselves. I volunteered there, they are NOT our friends..they euthanize dogs and LIE.Knowing what I know I would never associate with these people on any level. Annie Rutenberg

If you had bet your life, Annie, that I was a board member, you would be totally wrong. Just an Avery County working woman who loves animals and is hoping to set the record straight.

We took a couple of dogs that were left by their owner, we couldn't afford to keep them. This was very shortly after they opened.
Trick: Tell them if they don't take them, that you have no choice but to set them out somewhere like, not going to say any names of places, but tell them some unfavorable place, that is not the best place to leave an animal, and watch how they change their attitudes. Its a shame to do that, and I would never, I would've brought them back home and started my own humane society first, which I almost have already. But, the point is, they changed their tune and took the animals. Both dogs were full blooded hunting dogs, I know they had no problems finding homes for them. I understand that they are limited on their space, money, blah blah. But why did they build that building that is bigger than Cannon, if they had no intention of helping the homeless animals?

If you do an online search for 'Avery Humane Society special meeting feb 13, 2012' you will see that it is not 'overcrowding' that is an insult to our intellegence, it is on the record that they discussed setting occupancy limits of 40 dogs and 40 cats. Assuming the building is 21,000 square feet and the lobby alone could probably fit 4 baby grand pianos, it has nothing to do w/ overcrowding. They are turning away animals in need and the animal lovers in Avery County are very disappointed.(Myself included) Then if you search High Country Press you will read that they are a no kill shelter. When I found out dogs were being euthanized I asked questions and got the same response as OP. "SHAME ON YOU" Then I received a letter from a Board member stating they are not no kill, they strive to be. I strive to be a size 4 but if I said I was I'd be a liar. They just hired a new Executive Director, please God, let's pray that the situation improves.

It is sick sick sick to do what Solution said. People like that are the root cause of so much misery for animals in the county today. I think you have too much time on your hands to spend time writing crap like that. To spend time criticising the only organization that cares for animals and the hundreds of county residents, like myself, that volunteer to help and really know what is going on at the shelter. One woman, whose name I won't mention, starting knocking the Humane Society all over Avery County because she did not get invited to a party. Okay, to set the record straight. Of course there are empty kennels. They are in the quarantine area dummy. Get your facts straight before you start railing on about something you know nothing about. Start talking to your neighbors about having animals running loose that are not fixed.

I saw the quarantine area dummy!!! Sorry but I don't care about the gossip you are talking about and I also don't care that you think you know everything. Go to some of the Humane society off the mountain that have buildings that are falling down and don't have "donations" coming in from all the rich people from Eseeola and Linville Ridge like Avery Humane does. With that kind of money and a building that might as well be a 5 star resort they should never have to be turning away animals that will probably die. I take care of my own dogs and cannot keep every stray that comes my way. My neighbors keep their dogs up thank you. There is always going to be stray animals running around. Bottom line: they are supposed to take in animals that might otherwise die if they don't.

My God how some of you don't know ACHS it is a private institution supported by private donors. Some of you actually believe it is Animal Control and supported by the county. They care for animals that are often just abandoned, or left at the door as the one person above said she does, and you knock them. What kind of thought process do you have? Untie your dog from the car door and get involved in something worthwhile. I guess if youhad your way they should just shut it down and let you go back to shooting your dogs and drowning your cats when you didn't want them anymore. This vindictiveness started when one woman was not invited to a party that was held by a private group for some of their large private large donors. She felt she should have been invited too so she went on a rampage visiting webpages in the county. You know who she is because she is a friend of yours or actually you. One woman is doing all this negativity and is is interesting to see how a person's rage over something manifests itself and then becomes an obsession. Kind of sad, really.

HAHAHAHAHA! I don't know what the hell you are talking about... or who the hell you are talking about.... So as far as your paranoid rant on whatever woman you are talking about-I really could care less. This county has never had animal control thank you I am very aware of that. Since you know so much about how animals are treated in this county why dont YOU do something about all the mistreated animals because the humane society sure as heck aint gonna take them. And if leaving them at the door is the only way to get a homeless animal into the shelter then I don't blame her!!! At least its not starving or freezing to death.

OMG,...GET A GRIP on yourself. I post under 1 name only and I am not trying to hide who I am. Instead of 'BLAMING' me for ALL your problems, why don't you just address each 1 individually. I have 3 beautiful ACHS dogs who are well cared for and greatly loved. For God's sake, I was a VOLUNTEER, do you think I would ever abandon a dog in front of the Humane Society? If that's what you think of the good people of Avery County and the needs of our animal population, you certainly don't come across as serving the animals or the people in our County as we deserve.

Well it seems to me that while there is so much conversation going on with what is in the past, we must keep in mind that one poor animal is probably starving, hit by a car or neglected by its owner. so make room as you would for any guest to your home..this is what an Human Society is expected to do. When I see an animal dead along the road it makes my heart break to know that could be someone's pet that maybe just got lose or lost from it's home. I am saddened by some of the comments when in in truth it is all about the needs of our stray friends....
Animal lovers have a burden on their heart when they take the time to pick up an animal from an unsafe situation and bring it to a place such as the Avery Humane Society where they believe this animal will be taken in and safely placed in a warm loving home (refer the humane website as a no kill shelter) now lets get to work and start doing what is the right thing to do, and correct what is wrong together ... but it does start at the Humane Society to follow through and lead the way and always remember WWJD???

I'm pretty sure that that shelter was paid for by donors and not our tax dollars. I'm proud of the shelter and that there even is one. I'm sure they are doing the best they can. Why are you so worked up? Wouldn't you agree having a shelter paid for by the people's loving donations is better than not having a shelter at all? Why don't you go raise money and build and operate a shelter of your own instead of criticizing this one.
