Schools are requiring uniforms now because of the way kids are dressing for school, parents need to be PARENTS

Why a school uniform? Its a workaround for enforcing dress codes. Dress codes were rarely enforced in the 70s and 80s when I was a student of the Newington School System.

I believe a dress code in public schools is a great idea. Not only will it save parents money in the long run, but it will greatly reduce the the pressures of fitting in. As far as personal identity goes, the kids can still have that but save that for outside of school. Many conflicts will be eliminated if all dress the same, as well as physical confrontations over clothing. Its sad that today young people are so focused on the physical when it comes to who they are. They put so much focus on the outer that their character suffers.

Maybe they should look at the dress code and focus on enforcing it. Uniforms at not a be all end all. It is more a stigma thatn a solution

I think the Board of Education needs to focus on issues that will directly improve the education our children receive. We are spending valuable time debating a dress code or uniform policy instead of focusing on issues that really matter!

Kids can be kids outside of school. Schools are supposed to be getting the youth of this country ready to be adults. Uniforms are one way to make sure that they understand what someone who has a job dresses like. Teachers will also have more time to work rather than chasing kids around who are not following the "dress code".

I am a parent of a Newington eighth grader. I think school uniforms will benefit the quality of education by removing the external queues as to who belongs to which socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic groups. It levels the playing field and forces everyone in the school to be seen as equivalent. Is this not what the Sheff v. O'Neil lawsuit was about?

Most areas of the business world do not require uniforms. A dress code is fine, if it is enforced.

I think there should be a certain dresscode to abide by,but not go as far as having to wear uniforms that it just unfair in my opinon.

If your so concerned about debating this dress code then vote in favor of it and move on to the next issue.

Teachers should be teaching and not worrying about dress code that cannot be enforced. It’s not about suburban or urban schools; someone is always trying to single areas out. It’s about the quality of teaching, teacher can spend more time teaching then having someone pull there pants up or cover up because you’re exposing too much.
If parents were more into parenting this would not be an issue. Parents need to be parents instead of their kid’s best friend.

I grew up in the Newington School system and the way kids dress today is much different than we did 10 years ago. I knew people who got in trouble for having shorts or skirts that went more than 2 inches above the knee. I don't know if the dress code has been changed since I graduated, but I know the popular styles now a days would not have been allowed when I was there. I'm not sure if uniforms are the answer, but I know when I was in school, it mattered what you wore to school. If everyone wore the same thing, than maybe more attention could be paid towards what really matters, education!

I am greatly disturbed by what has been presented by the media concerning last night's meeting. An overwhelming majority of parents at that meeting were OPPOSED to a school uniform and IN FAVOR of a tighter dress code. The dress code IS NOT being looked at due to any "security" issues- Newington is a very safe town and school system. As usual, the media blows everything out of proportion. I hope viewers keep that in mind.

I am very disturbed over the media's portrayal of last night's meeting concerning Newington's dress code. An overwhelming majority of the parents at last night's meeting were OPPOSED to school uniforms and more IN FAVOR of a tighter dress code. Students as well are OVERWHELMINGLY against uniforms. This topic is not being discussed due to "security" reasons like NBC is reporting... Newington is a VERY safe town and school district. We have fantastic students and families who have been wrongly victimized by the recent OVERBLOWN reports that the media are displaying. I hope viewers keep that in mind. Attend a meeting if you want to know the real story- don't trust second or third hand accounts!

The only problem with dress codes is they get slack as we have seen in the past. My child would never leave the house looking like most of the kids do today. Crotches down to the knee, net tops, girls that look like cheap hookers. If the parents don't want to take responsibility for their kids looking decent then it is up to the school.

A uniform, Why Not? If you are a responsabile parent, you will send your kid to school knowing what she or he are wearing but sometimes this is not the reality and kid have to be sended back to their house to change or they have to come back next day. every school in CT have a dress code that no ones wanted to follow and by the summer time you have to see those girls that wanted to express themself wearing closed that do not belong to be inside a classroom. we are not talking about take out young peoples individuality and is ok to be different but, hey! remenber that we all live in a society that is culturally diverse and so what. Is not where your come from that matters,is how we can help our kids to focus in a classroom and do better in school and we don't forget that you can save extra money with this uniform and after school your kid can wear that new dress or shirt and they will look different when they go to a school party or school activity that dosen't require uniform. Please at least reconsider the idea.

Perhaps the proposal should be to tighten the dress code for a trial period, then have an evaluation period after that to review the compliance, statistically. If compliance is less than a previously agreed-upon percentage, then uniforms would be the next step. As for a stigma associated with uniforms because city schools use them and not rural - don't be such a bigot. What makes you think you're any better than the parents and children in city schools? That your wishes and desires for your children are any nobler than those of city parents?
