Does the Mafia exist in Evansville
From Evansville to Indy

Two things,
There may not be "Goodfellas" stuff happening in Evansville. But most certainly there are people that partake in "Grips and Grins." Perhaps you should research certain family names that have been in the city since the 1850's.

2nd. I now live in indy which according to the 2010 census is the 12 th largest city in the usa. You are correct in stating that the city has a population of over 800 thousand people. You failed to mention the Indy metro population of over 2 million people. Think of it this way, about a million people live in the circle and about a million people live outside of the circle.

Sure Indy is not NewYork, Chicago, LA, or Miami.

But we have hosted a super bowl. We have the indy 500 yearly. The NFL combine is yearly. We have two professional sports teams. A minor league baseball team affiliated with the pittsburgh pirates. We have a ushl team which had a player picked in the first round of the 2008 nhl draft.
depending on the year, we host final fours, elite eights for college basketball.

For travel, we have an international airport. AMTRAK for service from Chicago to New York City. Indy is in the middle of several major cities like Chicago, cincinatti, columbus oh, St Louis, Louisville, Detroit (thats a reach). Indy's location to these other cities coupled with interstates to these cities has led to rapid growth.

In regards to culture and university education, we have traveling broadway shows (recently jersey boys at the murat). An excellent orchestra. Big ticket artists who come to perform at bankers life field house and other venues. Several excellent Universities such as Butler, IUPUI, Marian University, and University of Indianapolis.

Granted, Indy does have a poor school system called IPS. The crime is awful here, i plan on moving outside of the circle when i get enough money saved. And the weather, compared to Evansville, is awful in the winter.

But u have to take the good with the bad. Oh, did i mention that the cost of living is not that much more than Evansville?

I'd do a little research on Indy before I say that it doesn't have much to offer when compared to other cities or states.

Since I moved to Indy from Evansville in 2008, I have never had a weekend where I didn't have something to do.

What do you plan on doing in your life? Plan on being a zombie for life? Who do u know that has grey hair claiming to be in a gang? Where are they? Do they have cars and cribs? I doubt it. Its a circle life is. You act tough now but that's because u protect each other. What happens when u bump into an earned enemy by yourself? What if your out numbered. Evansville is small and its easy to catch someone slipping. Don't be a statistic that negatively effects your life. Your life is the only one you will ever have. Make yourself happy later by doing something for urself now. If crime is your choice then quit being stupid with it. Don't talk about what you do. Stay under the radar. Take care of the people around you. Keep your nose clean. Keep your I's dotted and your ts crossed. Otherwise be ready for prison. It isn't fun. Trust me. TV will mislead you. Good luck and I hope you are successful with whatever you choose to do in life

Obviously nobody took my advice and looked up Ray Ryan...here you go.

Raymond J. Ryan (January 9, 1904 in Watertown, Wisconsin October 18, 1977) was a gambler, oilman, promoter, and developer.

[edit] Murder in Evansville

On October 18, 1977, Ray Ryan went to a health club, as he often did. When he finished his workout, he walked outside to his new Lincoln Mark V coupe. Someone had, however, connected a bomb to the ignition of the car. As soon as Ryan turned the key, the car exploded violently. The impact of explosion killed Ryan almost instantly. It took two days to locate and collect all of the pieces of the car one piece was located 377 feet from the scene of the explosion.[3] The murder was unsolved.

Look up all the people involved with the investigation...Bagbey, Levco...its a who's who. In case you don't know this was just of the corner of green river and bellemeade.

No one was ever charged.

Omg, this thread is a shining example of how ignorant people in Evansville are.Eight months ago I moved to Ft. Wayne and everyone up here knows Evansville as a white trash, meth town. Its so embarrasing to let people know I was born here that I now say i'm from Indy. I hope you people are happy with the reputation that you have created for you're home.

In spite of Evansville's flaws, I openly and wholeheartedly embrace the city. I am proud to say that I am from there without any reservation.

Now lets talk about the rest of Indiana who takes Evansville's taxes and distributes them to Indianapolis, and all the cities in Northern Indiana.

And so that you don't think that i am talking out of my ass, please check this 2010 report from the Indiana Fiscal Policy institute. http://www.indianafiscal.org/docs/IFPI_Intras...

Vanderburgh county pays more taxes per person than any other county in Indiana. It seems that places like Indy, Ft Wayne, South Bend, etc. Need our money more than Evansville does.

As an Evansvillian who lives in Indy, the rest of Indiana can rot in hell for all I care.

I remember hearing about that story from my grandpa who had very close friends who were in the mafia from Chicago area. The police didn't solve that case for a reason.

I'll put it like this. There was a guy that owned one italian restaraunt and another was a steakhouse outside of evansville. He is originally from new york and he is connected. Both of those restaurants are closed now and he was arrested a few years back for money laundering out of town. I'm not saying his name and I'm not saying what the restaurants were called or where they were located outside of evansville because I don't wanna tarnish his name like that.
