A Michigan father is still paying child support for his son who died of meningitis 25 years ago.
Lional Campbell's son Michael passed away in 1988 at the age of three but because of a mistake in Wayne County's records, support payments totaling thousands of dollars have continued to come out of his bank account.
The county says no one ever notified them of the boy's death, until Campbell realized the error in 2011. He previously thought the cash was going to pay child support for an older son he shares with Michael's mother, who is now 34 years old.
Believing the payments should have ended, Campbell queried why he was still paying for his surviving child, when the county told him the payments were back child support for Michael, WXYZ.com reported.
'It took a lot out of me,' he told the news station.
Campbell, who now lives in Kentucky, traveled to Detroit to prove his son's death. After seeing the boy's death certificate they acknowledged they were in the wrong.
'When I went there, the court said, you're right. You shouldn't be paying no money,' he said.'I said, "Well that's what they got me doing."'
However, they told him he still owed about $43,000 for the boy because of hefty surcharges.
Further audits decreased the amount, and officials now say he owes $6,460.08.
But Campbell is disputing that he still owes anything, given the fact he's been paying for two children for so many years. He is seeking another audit from the county.
The county told WXYZ.com that the 'regretful' mistake was human error rather than a systemic problem.
The mother of Campbell's sons refused to comment to the news station.

Wow that's sad sometimes people do abuse the Child support system. There was a man who was arrested for not paying child support but a DNA test showed he wasn't the Father but since he signed the birth certificate he still has to pay I don't think it's right.

My bestfriend pays child support for 2 children that aren't his. He found out after he received an email from the children's birth father. Him and ole girl are back together now and he told him "Thanks for taking care of my children, partner". He paid for a DNA test and he isn't the dad but his name is on the certificate. The only way he would be able to get out of it is if the mother agreed to let him drop his "parental rights" and/or their "birth" dad signed the birth certificate which he won't do b/c he doesn't want to pay child support. The CS case is in Louisiana.

So sad. The system obviously failed in this example. However, there are many times that the system fails to locate and hold many accountable-let's not lose sight of this reality.
